A decade ago, for example, El Salvador’s murder rate was 106.3 per 100,000 people, the highest in the world . Now, thanks to the harsh—and highly effective—crime-fighting policies of its crypto-loving president, Nayib Bukele, it’s down to 1.9 per 100,000, just a hair higher than the UK.
With the streets now safe, tourists are flocking to the small Central American nation, which is set to welcome 3.2 million international visitors by 2024, including more than 1.2 million from the United States, an 80% increase from 2019.

UNWTO data also shows a global list of countries that receive the most and the least tourists in 2024. Finally, there is Tuvalu. Of the 195 countries that have provided tourism data to UNWTO since 2022, Tuvalu has the lowest number of annual visitors: just 200 (in 2022; figures for 2023 and 2024 are not yet available). That’s about the same number of passengers on a single flight.
