The above results were released by Ookla - the developer of the Speedtest network speed measurement tool. According to recorded data, Vietnam's mobile internet speed increased by 7.7% compared to the previous month, ranking 19th in the world , surpassing countries such as India, France and Finland. In Southeast Asia, Vietnam ranked third, after Malaysia (168.94 Mbps, 12th in the world) and Singapore (160.56 Mbps, 15th). The UAE continues to hold the global leading position with mobile network speed up to 543.91 Mbps.

Fixed internet in Vietnam has also improved, reaching an average speed of 164.77 Mbps, ranking 35th in the world. However, there is still a significant gap compared to leading countries in the region such as Singapore (345.33 Mbps) or Thailand (238.41 Mbps).

Previously, the January 2025 report from Ookla showed that mobile network speed in Vietnam reached 134.19 Mbps, up 54% from 86.96 Mbps in December 2024 and about 3 Mbps away from the Top 20.

With the current growth rate, Vietnam is quickly catching up with the world's leading countries in mobile internet, especially in 5G deployment. It is expected that as MobiFone joins the 5G race and other carriers continue to expand their coverage, Vietnam's mobile internet speed may continue to increase in 2025.

5G boosts mobile internet speeds in Vietnam

The commercialization of 5G in the last months of 2024 is considered the main driving force for the sudden growth of mobile internet speed in Vietnam. Before this time, in September 2024, Ookla recorded that Vietnam's average mobile internet speed was only 54.17 Mbps and ranked 51st in the world. After nearly 6 months of 5G deployment, this number has increased nearly three times, helping Vietnam move up 32 places.

At the same time, data from iSpeed - a network speed measuring tool of the Ministry of Science and Technology - also shows the breakthrough of 5G in Vietnam. In February 2025, the average download speed of the 5G network reached 187.58 Mbps, nearly three times faster than the 65.61 Mbps of the regular mobile internet network.

Ookla data shows that 5G penetration in Vietnam increased sharply from nearly 0% in September 2024 to 31.9% in February 2025, reflecting rapid expansion of coverage.

Along with the expansion of infrastructure, major network operators in Vietnam have also launched preferential packages to attract users to switch to 5G. Currently, users have the option of the cheapest package of 10,000 VND/day to use 5G. The total number of 5G subscribers nationwide is currently estimated at more than 8 million and this number may increase even faster when in the first quarter and early second quarter, another network operator deploys new network technology.

This improvement not only benefits individual users but also creates a great driving force for industries that depend on high-speed connections such as e-commerce, financial technology (fintech), smart cities, and smart manufacturing. In the context of strong digital transformation, investing in and developing 5G infrastructure will help Vietnam increase its competitiveness in the international arena.
