On August 14 in Hanoi, the Military Industry and Telecommunications Group ( Viettel ) and Qualcomm Group had a working session and signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the goal of turning Vietnam into a major center for technology research and development in the world.
Attending the meeting, on behalf of Qualcomm Group, there was Mr. Cristiano Amon - Chairman and Global CEO along with the leadership of Asia and Vietnam; on behalf of Viettel Group, there was Lieutenant General Tao Duc Thang - Chairman and General Director of the Group, the Board of Directors and leaders of the Group's key units.
Starting cooperation in 2009, after 16 years of companionship and development, Viettel and Qualcomm have successfully deployed many products belonging to 3G, 4G, and 5G technology generations.
Notably, in 2022, the two corporations will join hands to research and produce 5G Open RAN broadcasting stations. After only 2 years, Viettel became the first partner in the world to put 5G Open RAN broadcasting stations using Qualcomm chipsets into trial deployment.
It is expected that in 2025, Viettel will deploy more than 2,000 5G Open RAN stations on a large scale, affirming Viettel's ability to master 5G technology. The product has been exported by Viettel to the Middle East market. This is a step forward to make Vietnam one of the 6 countries in the world with the capacity to produce 5G network equipment. This project has just been nominated for the "Open RAN Excellence" category at the Network X Awards 2025 taking place in Paris, France in October 2025.

In addition, Viettel and Qualcomm successfully developed the world's first 5G AI Camera for smart traffic, which has been widely deployed in the field of smart traffic in Vietnam and is being exported to a number of international markets.
To continue the success of cooperation between the two groups, in the strategic cooperation agreement, Viettel and Qualcomm will continue to launch research and development projects with the goal of Viettel mastering strategic technologies, including: 5G/6G infrastructure, AI-based smart network management system, AI processing infrastructure, data center infrastructure, AI solutions for governments and businesses, 5G/6G smart terminals such as AI cameras, phones, tablets, computers, AIoT...
These are all technologies and products in the group of 11 strategic technologies announced by the Government, contributing to realizing the goal of making the digital economy contribute 30% of Vietnam's GDP by 2030.
In the context of the constantly changing technology market, the time to research products and launch them to the market needs to be shortened, so the long-term cooperation process and certain successes of the two corporations are a launching pad for Viettel and Qualcomm to go hand in hand with the world's technological development, towards a "Make in Vietnam" product ecosystem capable of serving domestic needs as well as exporting abroad.
The meeting between the two top leaders of Qualcomm and Viettel took place in the context of Vietnam's drastic implementation of national strategies on science and technology development, innovation and digital transformation, in which technology corporations such as Viettel play a pioneering and leading role.
Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon affirmed: "What makes the relationship between Viettel and Qualcomm special is that the two corporations have a long history of cooperation, with the same desire to develop breakthrough solutions that bring value to customers. Viettel is different from many other businesses in that it has a strong R&D team, especially the spirit of dedication, ready to solve difficult problems with Qualcomm. That spirit is the reason why we want to accompany Viettel."

Lieutenant General Tao Duc Thang - Chairman and General Director of Viettel Group emphasized: "The CEO of Qualcomm came to Vietnam and Viettel this time at the right time, when the Vietnamese technology business community is being given a great mission by the State in researching and applying technology to develop the country. Deeper cooperation between the two groups in the next phase will certainly open up historic opportunities, making Vietnam a leading technology center in the region."
After the signing of the cooperation agreement, Mr. Cristiano Amon had a sharing session with Viettel's leaders and technology experts globally about new technology trends, practical application of solutions and experience in building a multinational organization./.
Cooperation results between Viettel and Qualcomm:
In 2009, Qualcomm granted a chipset license to Viettel to successfully develop and produce 3G USB made in Vietnam - a device connecting to broadband Internet via Viettel's 3G mobile network, achieving a maximum speed of 7.2 Mbps download and 5.76 Mbps upload.
In 2017, Viettel and Qualcomm successfully developed the first made-in-Vietnam WiFi AP product. WiFi products manufactured by Viettel have 3 times higher access speed but cost only about 70% compared to similar products on the market.
In 2018, Viettel was granted the right to use Qualcomm's patents to develop, manufacture and distribute 3G & 4G devices. At the same time, the two sides jointly produced the VIPPHONE security phone - a phone line capable of encrypting calls, messages and preventing eavesdropping. This product possesses Qualcomm's dedicated Snapdragon 625 security chip and the world's safest algorithm, which even supercomputers cannot decode.
