Once one of the first models to lay the foundation for VinFast's electric vehicle journey, the VF 8 is known for its rather "ambitious" positioning: modern design, advanced technology, and a focus on futuristic experiences.
However, the new version launched on May 20th shows that the company has made significant adjustments towards a more practical design. According to VinFast, the new car has a listed price of 999 million VND, with an additional discount of 51 million VND for customers who place a deposit early from May 27th to June 3rd, 2026. Delivery is expected at the end of July 2026.
Compared to its predecessor, which had many battery and drivetrain configurations, the new VF 8 is significantly simplified. It uses a single 170 kW (228 hp) electric motor with a maximum torque of 330 Nm, driving the front wheels. The 60.13 kWh battery pack provides a maximum range of 500 km according to NEDC standards.
This is a notable change. The old VF 8 aimed for a powerful image with a twin-motor, all-wheel-drive configuration in some higher-end versions. Meanwhile, the new VF 8 reduces the configuration to a more adequate level, optimizing operating costs and making it more accessible to the general public.
In fact, the biggest demand from urban SUV customers today is no longer for excessive acceleration or overly complex technology, but rather for spaciousness, reasonable running costs, ease of driving, and daily reliability. In this respect, the new VF 8 is heading in the right direction.
VinFast's D-segment electric SUV has dimensions of 4,701 x 1,872 x 1,670 mm (length x width x height), a wheelbase of 2,840 mm, a 5-seat configuration, and a ground clearance of 170 mm. These specifications show that the vehicle maintains its spaciousness advantage compared to many C-segment SUVs in the same price range.

One of the key features that the Vietnamese automaker is promoting on its new car is the new suspension system, which utilizes Frequency Selective Dampers (FSD) on both axles. This feature is typically found on models prioritizing comfort, as it allows for flexible adjustment of stiffness based on road conditions. Given the urban traffic conditions in Vietnam, this could be a much more useful upgrade than simply focusing on increased power output.
Nevertheless, the new generation VF 8 still has certain weaknesses. While the switch to a single-motor front-wheel drive configuration offers some advantages, it detracts somewhat from the premium image and powerful driving feel that were hallmarks of the original VF 8.
Furthermore, the price of 999 million VND puts the VF 8 in a very competitive zone. Within this price range, consumers currently have many options, including 7-seater models such as the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento.
In the context of the Vietnamese market's strong shift towards 7-seater family cars and multi-purpose MPVs, the new VF 8 is actually competing with MPV models such as the Toyota Innova Cross, Kia Carnival, Hyundai Custin, and Mitsubishi Destinator – which have the advantage of spacious interiors, high versatility, and suitability for large families. Compared to these competitors, one advantage of the VF 8 is its low running costs in the early years.

Nevertheless, the new generation VF 8 clearly represents a significant shift in VinFast's product philosophy. Instead of trying to be an "overly tech-packed" electric SUV, the car is being brought closer to the actual needs of Vietnamese customers.
This change could boost VF 8 sales amidst Vietnam's growing trend of electric vehicles – especially in major cities. This approach will also help VF 8 – after a rather difficult period in business – establish a stronger position in the market.
