VinFuture inspires young researchers to pursue science

Việt NamViệt Nam13/12/2024

Frankly admitting the shortcomings and challenges they face, young Vietnamese scientists believe that VinFuture has given them the opportunity to access the latest knowledge and technology through exchanges and sharing with brilliant minds gathered in Vietnam. From there, researchers have more motivation and confidence in the path they have chosen.

More opportunities as new doors of cooperation open

The VinFuture Prize has gone through four seasons. Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Phi Le has never missed a year. The 42-year-old female scientist, who is currently in charge of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence Research and Application (AI4LIFE), Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that each VinFuture season brings her special impressions.

“With each passing year, VinFuture’s influence grows. I have had the opportunity to meet many famous scientists and learn a lot from their own scientific paths. Many people have overcome a challenging journey, overcome social skepticism, and persevered on their chosen path to achieve the glory they have today,” Associate Professor Phi Le expressed.

In 2024, the VinFuture Grand Prize will be awarded to five of the world's leading scientists for their groundbreaking contributions to advancing the advancement of deep learning. As a scientist who has spent more than 10 years researching the Internet of Things (IoT) and AI in Vietnam, this honor is especially encouraging for Associate Professor Le.

“I feel lucky because I am working in a field that is receiving attention from society. This means I will have more advantages and also have more confidence and motivation in my research,” the female Associate Professor shared.

The young scientist also believes that this year's Main Prize demonstrates VinFuture's outstanding vision. The "Science for Life" seminars also carry an inspirational message by emphasizing practical application values, instead of just stopping at theoretical research.

“The ultimate destination of science is still how to serve life, VinFuture is like a reminder for researchers like me,” said the female Associate Professor.

Right from his first participation in the activities of the VinFuture Award Week, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Tan Hung, Deputy Director in charge of the Institute of Advanced Science and Technology, University of Danang, also clearly felt the spirit and meaningful message of this award. The young researcher had the opportunity to present his project “Smart Optical Information for Massive Data Networks” to Dr. Xuedong Huang - CTO of Zoom Video Communications (USA), member of the VinFuture Award Council.

“It is a rare opportunity to have the world’s leading scientists comment on my research, and when they give their comments, they are extremely valuable knowledge and experience. After the discussion, I will contact the scientists again to seek opportunities to further develop my research,” Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Tan Hung excitedly shared.

Having followed the VinFuture Prize for many years, Dr. Luong Minh Thang, a senior researcher at Google DeepMind and co-founder of the New Turing Institute, assessed that the practical cooperation opportunities are a testament to VinFuture’s reputation and contributions. Not only does it inspire and encourage researchers, the VinFuture bridge also helps lead to valuable long-term cooperation.

“VinFuture not only connects scientists from universities but also large enterprises around the world. The clearest proof is the award given to Founder and CEO Jensen Huang of NVIDIA. This could be the door to open valuable cooperation opportunities between NVIDIA and Vietnamese companies and enterprises,” said Dr. Thang.

More maturity from international experience

In addition to inspiring and bringing new opportunities, for Associate Professor Dr. Phi Le, who has spent many years researching and studying abroad, VinFuture also helps fill the gaps that young domestic researchers are lacking.

“When I returned to Vietnam, I rarely had the opportunity to experience a research environment like I did abroad. VinFuture helped me to interact with the most famous scientists in the world in a very high academic environment,” said Associate Professor Phi Le.

The prestige of the VinFuture Prize is increasingly spreading as it gathers many of the world's leading scientists.

Through the VinFuture event series, a genuine environment for exchange and learning is opened for young researchers and science enthusiasts. When interacting with great minds, Vietnamese scientists also realize their strengths and shortcomings.

“The strength of Vietnamese people is their desire to learn and have knowledge. But that is just the starting point. Doing science is a journey. It is the exposure that VinFuture brings that helps young Vietnamese scientists become more mature and confident on the path they have chosen,” said Associate Professor, Dr. Le Hoang Son, Institute of Information Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

Sharing the same view, Associate Professor Phi Le said that in a flat world, the opportunity for Vietnamese scientists to access new knowledge and master new technologies is no longer as difficult as before. After 4 seasons of VinFuture, the gap between Vietnam and the world, especially in the field of AI, has gradually narrowed.

Vietnamese scientists also affirmed that the international resonance that VinFuture creates through the seasons will not only encourage research activities in general, but also promote society to pay more attention to the field of science and technology. Because science and technology is the most important driving force for countries, including Vietnam, to have breakthrough development.

“VinFuture creates opportunities for Vietnam to catch up with the latest science and technology trends and access the latest knowledge that we normally do not have many opportunities to access,” said Associate Professor Phi Le.
