Sustainable poverty reduction
Vinh Phuc province currently has 11 communes in ethnic minority and mountainous areas (EM&MN). In order to narrow the gap in living standards and average income of EM&MN areas compared to the province's average, in recent years, Vinh Phuc provincial authorities at all levels have implemented many programs, projects, and support policies, contributing to promoting socio -economic development in EM areas. Typical of these are promoting the potential strengths of the region, promoting agricultural production according to the value chain, and forming areas for growing precious medicinal herbs.
Tam Dao is a mountainous district with about 42% of the population being ethnic minorities. With a diverse mountain and forest ecosystem. At the same time, with special microclimate and soil: The temperature range between day and night is higher than the plains, Tam Dao mountainous area is very favorable for the development of medicinal plants. Ethnic minorities in the district have formed many medicinal plant growing areas according to the production chain, thereby contributing to the shift in crop structure, creating livelihoods and increasing income, contributing positively to the socio-economic development of the locality.
A typical example is the case of Ms. Hoang Thi Bay's family (residing in Dong Pheo village, Yen Duong commune, Tam Dao). Previously, Ms. Bay's family's hill was only used to grow cassava and other crops with low economic value. In 2017, after being informed by officials and other households about the benefits of growing Ba Kich and seeing that many traders came to Tam Dao to buy this product at high prices, Ms. Bay's family renovated the hill to grow seedlings and test-plant Ba Kich.
After a period of care, realizing that the tree was suitable for the soil and climate, Ms. Bay's family boldly borrowed capital to continue expanding the area of Ba Kich planting.
According to Ms. Bay, growing Morinda officinalis is not difficult, requires little care, and can be planted under the canopy of other trees and still grow and develop well. In the first crop, Ms. Bay's family harvested more than 2 tons of Morinda officinalis, earning a profit of over 300 million VND. Thanks to that stable source of income, Ms. Bay's family's life gradually stabilized.

It can be said that one of the supports for many ethnic minority households in Tam Dao district to boldly borrow capital to invest and expand the area of planting Ba Kich trees as well as other medicinal herbs is thanks to the guarantee of purchasing raw materials from processing enterprises. A typical example is Minh Phuc An Agricultural Products Processing Joint Stock Company (located in Tam Dao district).
To gradually increase the value of medicinal plants, the Company has invested in building factories, installing modern machinery and equipment systems. Meeting the conditions for manufacturing and processing products from Ba Kich as well as many other medicinal plants, applying high standards such as ISO 22000:2018. Up to now, the Company's main products, such as Cordyceps Wine with Ba Kich Tam Dao, Ba Kich Tam Dao Wine, Ba Kich Sam Cau Wine have been recognized as achieving 4-star OCOP certification. In the coming time, the Company will continue to expand the market, conduct marketing, promote key products and orient the development of brands of Ba Kich products according to the value chain model.
Ms. Au Thi Kim Phuong, Director of Minh Phuc An Agricultural Products Processing Joint Stock Company, said: The chain of production and processing of products has stimulated farmers to expand the cultivation of Ba Kich trees as well as other medicinal plants, thereby bringing high income to people.

Promoting the potential of indigenous medicinal plants
According to statistics of Tam Dao District People's Committee, the whole district has over 200 different types of medicinal plants, such as: Morinda officinalis, Golden Tea, Panax notoginseng, Scutellaria baicalensis, Polygala tenuifolia, Polygala tenuifolia... Developing and expanding the area of medicinal plant cultivation not only helps many farming households escape poverty and become rich, but also contributes to preserving precious medicinal plants.
Currently, in Vinh Phuc province, many areas specializing in growing medicinal plants have been formed, mainly in Tam Dao district. Some typical projects on preserving, planting and caring for medicinal plants, such as: The project of growing Cat Sam and Golden Camellia that meet organic standards, have been effectively implemented. Along with that, members of the Provincial Oriental Medicine Association are also actively preserving and developing precious medicinal plants, such as: Sam Bo Chinh, Ba Kich, Sa Nhan, Khoi Nhung, Ca Gai Leo, Hoang Dang, Cot Toai Bo... with a total area of nearly 119 hectares.
For organic medicinal herb growing models in the period of 2023 - 2025, with a vision to 2030, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vinh Phuc province has coordinated with localities to select 4 organic medicinal herb production models with a scale of 1 ha/model, including 2 models of Golden Flower Tea production in Tam Quan commune, Tam Dao district and 2 models of organic Ba Kich production in Thai Hoa commune, Bac Binh commune, Lap Thach district.
In the coming time, Vinh Phuc province will continue to promote the development of medicinal plant cultivation models into commodity production industries, increasing the application of science and technology in production. Thereby, building brands for medicinal plants of Vinh Phuc associated with shifting crop structure, protecting the ecological environment, biodiversity, creating conditions for tourism development, improving the quality of life for people (especially in ethnic minority areas).
