The establishment of the Vietnam Clinical Microbiology Association is a concrete step to realize one of the important policies of the Government as stated in the "National Strategy on Prevention and Control of Antimicrobial Resistance in Vietnam for the period 2023-2030, with a vision to 2045". That is to slow down the progression of antimicrobial resistance, prevent and control the spread of resistant microorganisms and infectious diseases. At the same time, the Association also contributes to ensuring that antimicrobial drugs are always available and used appropriately to effectively treat infectious diseases, helping to protect, care for, and improve human health, protect the environment, and develop the country's economy and society.
Vinmec Times City International General Hospital was chosen as the headquarters of the Vietnam Clinical Microbiology Association, marking the recognition of its professional capacity and international standard facilities. With modern and synchronous testing equipment and a team of leading experts, Vinmec not only laid the foundation for the Association's establishment but also directly supported the Ministry of Health in analyzing data and publishing annual national surveillance reports on antibiotic resistance, making an important contribution to the silent disease prevention strategy in Vietnam.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Dung, General Director of Vinmec Healthcare System, said: “ With the responsibility of a pioneering healthcare system, Vinmec commits to closely accompany the Vietnam Clinical Microbiology Association in all professional and research activities. We are ready to mobilize resources, share knowledge and promote quality standards to contribute to improving the effectiveness of antibiotic resistance prevention nationwide .”

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Doan Mai Phuong, Head of Microbiology Department, Vinmec Times City International General Hospital, President of the Vietnam Clinical Microbiology Association, Vietnam is among the countries with a very high rate of drug resistance with multi-resistant bacteria, making treatment difficult. Recognizing this challenge, Vietnam has quickly become one of the first 6 countries in the Asia-Pacific region to develop and implement a National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance Prevention and Control. This effort has been highly appreciated and recognized by the international community as an important contribution to the global fight against antimicrobial resistance.
According to the President of the Vietnam Clinical Microbiology Association, clinical microbiology plays a very important role in preventing antibiotic resistance. Because in order to detect drug-resistant microorganisms, hospitals need to have a quality-assured clinical microbiology laboratory. The results of the antibiotic susceptibility test are evidence for choosing effective antibiotics for treatment, avoiding overuse and reducing the spread of antibiotic resistance among microorganisms.
“The Vietnam Clinical Microbiology Association will be the highest professional organization in the field of Clinical Microbiology, unifying and standardizing regulations and professional processes, guiding the construction of a system to ensure the quality of microbiological testing nationwide, aiming to meet international standards,” Associate Professor, Dr. Doan Mai Phuong affirmed.

The World Health Organization's Global Surveillance System on Antimicrobial Use and Resistance (WHO-GLASS) recommends that each country should have multiple internationally integrated reference laboratories to ensure reliable data and support the national network. Following this orientation, Vinmec aims to build a national reference laboratory for antibiotic resistance that meets international standards.
