According to data from the Dak Lak Provincial Hydrometeorological Station, total rainfall from May to July 2025 is generally at approximately the average level of many years in the same period, in which July is approximately equal to or lower.
Accordingly, in order to proactively direct the effective production of the 2025 Summer-Autumn crop and limit damage caused by adverse weather conditions, the agricultural sector and localities in the province have actively implemented many synchronous solutions to help farmers effectively respond to adverse production conditions and make efforts to minimize costs.
Dong Cam irrigation system ensures two-crop irrigation for more than 20,000 hectares of rice. |
Mr. Nguyen Minh Hue, Chairman of Dong Cam Irrigation Company Limited, said that this crop, Dong Cam irrigation system ensures water supply for irrigation and drainage for production for nearly 20,000 hectares. Therefore, before opening the water, the unit has repaired 23 items including: construction and installation of works, dredging and repairing the canal system, and maintenance of machinery and equipment, with a budget of more than 9 billion VND.
Through recent inspections, the water resources of the irrigation system and reservoirs are guaranteed to serve the production of the 2025 Summer-Autumn crop. However, if the hot weather continues without rain, the risk of water shortage and local drought in some places may occur. To be proactive in irrigation, the company has proposed solutions to provide enough water and prevent drought in case of unusual weather changes.
According to Dak Lak Irrigation Works Management Company Limited, in the 2025 Summer-Autumn crop, the unit will provide irrigation water for over 27,307 hectares of crops, including 25,325 hectares of rice. To ensure water supply for irrigation, immediately after the end of the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, the company directed its affiliated units to close the sluice gates. Although the rainy season came early, the rainfall was unevenly distributed. The total average rainfall in the province from the beginning of 2025 to now has only reached about 30% compared to the average of many years. In addition, many reservoirs have decreased in water level after serving the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, and some reservoirs have reached the dead water level. According to data compiled from the units, currently only 49 reservoirs have reached normal water level and there are still 79 reservoirs with capacity below 50%.

Based on forecasts and actual situations at the projects, the company has directed its affiliated units to coordinate with local authorities to develop plans and solutions to prevent and combat drought and water shortages for all projects. In particular, it focuses on projects that are likely to lack water at the end of the season and have reserve sources to combat drought. At the same time, the company regularly monitors weather developments and water sources at the projects to proactively plan irrigation water in accordance with reality.
Mr. Trinh Quoc Bao, Deputy Director of Dak Lak Irrigation Works Management Company Limited, said that it is expected that about 20 works (including 17 reservoirs and 3 dams) are at risk of water shortage at the end of the crop and have reserves to serve drought prevention work. The area expected to be drought-resistant is about 923 hectares, including more than 902 hectares of rice. Up to this point, no works have had to carry out drought prevention work. However, the company continues to closely monitor the weather and water resources at the works to provide timely instructions on irrigation work for the 2025 Summer-Autumn crop.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, in the 2025 Summer-Autumn crop, the entire Dak Lak province sowed 91,500 hectares of wet rice. Up to now, farmers have basically planted seeds, ensuring the set time frame. Particularly in the eastern communes of the province, 24,500 hectares of rice have been sown. After more than a month of sowing, most of this area is currently in the tillering - late tillering stage.
According to Mr. Le Van Son (Phu Hoa 2 commune), these days, his family often visits the fields to check the water source and rice pests. This crop, more than 1 hectare of rice is cultivated according to the IPHM Program (Integrated Plant Health Management), so the rice is growing well. Mr. Son said that this is the third crop that his family has applied IPHM measures in rice fields supported and transferred by the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection. Through practical implementation, with just a few basic technical measures such as using seeds, reducing sowing density, applying organic fertilizers and treating straw with biological products, etc., it has shown clear effectiveness. Like the previous summer-autumn crop, after deducting costs, the family's profit was 4.5 million VND/sao, 2-3 million VND/sao higher than traditional rice production.

In the communes of Tay Dak Lak, the local agricultural sector, based on the actual water conditions of each region, recommends that farmers implement the program of "three reductions, three increases" and "one must, five reductions". For areas that actively regulate water, priority is given to using rice varieties with good quality to increase production value such as Dai Thom 8, ST25, RVT... In areas with low-lying fields, people take advantage of early sowing and use short- or medium-term pure rice varieties (90 - 95 days) to be able to harvest before August 30, avoiding rain and floods.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Con, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Thai Hai Agricultural and Fishery Production and Service Cooperative (Dak Lieng Commune) said that this crop, the unit sowed more than 289 hectares of rice, with high-quality rice varieties such as ST24, ST25, Dai Thom 8... Thanks to the advantage of having a raw material area along the Krong Ana River, it is very convenient in terms of irrigation water as well as being silted up by this river. Currently, the cooperative's rice area is produced according to VietGAP standards to meet the market's trend of clean - green consumption, with traceable product origin.
According to Mr. Truong Quang Tuong, Deputy Head of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection of Dak Lak province, in order to effectively manage diseases, the Department has issued documents guiding localities in caring for and preventing and controlling plant pests. At the same time, it has coordinated to organize training courses to impart knowledge on IPM (integrated pest management), IPHM on rice plants, helping farmers acquire many technical advances to apply in production to reduce input costs and increase profits in rice cultivation.
