Fake image of explosion at the Pentagon
NY POST SCREENSHOT
A fake image of an explosion at the Pentagon quickly went viral in a short time and affected the US stock market for about 10 minutes on May 22 (local time).
According to AFP, the incident has increased concerns that artificial intelligence (AI) could cause many problems for society.
The image, which many suspect was created by AI, has been circulated by several accounts, forcing the US Department of Defense to speak up and confirm that there was no such explosion.
"We can confirm that this is false information and the Pentagon was not attacked today," according to a US Department of Defense spokesman.
The Arlington Fire Department (Virginia) also spoke out on social media, affirming that there was no explosion or incident at the Pentagon or the surrounding area.
Previously, AI has also been used to create many fake photos that have caused a stir recently, such as the fake arrest of former US President Donald Trump, or Pope Francis wearing a designer down jacket.
Governments race to regulate AI tools
Advanced AI technology makes it easy for non-professionals to create convincing images in seconds, instead of requiring experts to use programs like Photoshop.
The fake image of the explosion at the Pentagon briefly affected the US stock market, with the S&P 500 index falling 0.29% compared to the closing time on May 19, before recovering.
“There is a decline associated with this fake news as the (trading) machines detect the information, but I think the extent of the decline is not consistent with the seemingly bad nature of fake news,” said Pat O’Hare at Briefing.com.
