Artist Hien Nguyen's solo exhibition has a very strange name, Toao (from December 25 to 30 at the Fine Arts Exhibition Hall of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, 16 Ngo Quyen, Hanoi ).
The artist said that this name is a combination of the two words "tỏ" and "ả". "That is my feeling about the universe. The more I learn about the universe, the more I see the real and the unreal, that is the clear and the virtual. And for an artist, the only way to face that feeling is to paint", Hien Nguyen said.

The Toao exhibition includes the lacquer work on Vo Cuc with a total area of 20 m2 and the series of Curves in lacquer on canvas including 8 small works measuring 120 x 150 cm. If lacquer on canvas is a traditional method that the artist has pursued for many years, then lacquer on canvas is a new experiment for artist Nguyen Hien. She started experimenting with painting on canvas after the 2019 exhibition U.
The female artist said that her feelings about the universe and painting about the universe were awakened when she frequently traveled between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. At that time, Hien Nguyen wondered if there was a life like this somewhere else on Earth. Hien Nguyen began to learn about the universe, instead of pouring all her heart into a common theme of still life, flowers, portraits...
The open universe inspiration in Hien Nguyen's lacquer paintings
The process of understanding the universe eventually brought her back to her own inner self. Hien Nguyen realized that she was already a separate universe, able to create separate universes. She also understood that she could not impose her universe on others.
"There are things that I thought I understood but turned out not to. The answer that I thought was correct, in the end, is completely subjective so everything is very virtual," Hien Nguyen confided.
In Toao , Vo Cuc is the work she devoted the most effort to, completed in 2 years. During the process of creating this work, Hien Nguyen went through many different emotions. The painting therefore has both brilliance and skepticism, clouds, mountains, sky and earth, and also love stories. " Vo Cuc is the most sublime moment in love", she shared.

With the works in Toao , one can see Hien Nguyen's different technical expressions. She is not dependent on the brilliance of gold in lacquer. The artist said that she only considers gold as a common yellow color, just for painting, not for showing off.
From there, the artist places gold under many layers of other colors, to push the color blocks to reach the desired color. When painting lacquer on canvas, she again pays attention to innovation, to create a strong feeling for the work.
Toao also marks the artist's transition to conceptual art.
