Sixty-six years ago, under the leadership of the former Ben Tre Provincial Party Committee, the army and people of the three communes of Dinh Thuy, Phuoc Hiep, and Binh Khanh launched the historic Dong Khoi Uprising, marking the beginning of a new revolutionary movement in the South. Building on that glorious tradition, the Party Committee, government, and people of Dong Khoi commune (Vinh Long province) today continue to unite and focus on building a clean and strong political system; promoting socio-economic development, and gradually improving the material and spiritual lives of the people.
Memories of the Uprising - a glorious milestone.
January 17, 1960, has gone down in history as a particularly important milestone in the revolutionary movement of South Vietnam. The sound of gunfire eliminating the notorious bandit Doi Ty (of the infamous Civil Guard Corps) signaled the beginning of the Uprising.
Immediately afterwards, revolutionary masses rose up simultaneously, surrounding and attacking the militia headquarters at Dinh Ran, while internal forces launched an uprising, seizing control of the Vam Nuoc Trong outpost.
The uprising in Dinh Thuy commune was a complete victory. The flame of the Dong Khoi movement quickly spread to Binh Khanh, Phuoc Hiep communes and many other localities in Mo Cay district, Ben Tre province (formerly).
On the night of January 17th and the following days, the sounds of gunfire and gongs echoed everywhere, encouraging the masses to rise up and fight, to hunt down and punish the cruel oppressors, and calling on soldiers to lay down their arms and return to the people.
The Đồng Khởi movement not only dismantled the enemy's repressive apparatus in many rural areas, but also created a widespread revolutionary movement with a powerful ripple effect throughout the South.
That victory demonstrated the immense power of the masses when they are properly enlightened, organized, and led; and at the same time affirmed the wise and decisive leadership role of the Party in the revolutionary cause of the South.
Those glorious years remain vivid in the memories of many generations of people in Dong Khoi commune today. Former Secretary of the Party Committee of Dinh Thuy commune, Le Van Cam, recalled: “At that time, my older brother, Le Van Duoc, was one of those who directly participated in the mission to eliminate the cruel tyrant Doi Ty, marking the beginning of the Dong Khoi movement. From that historical milestone, I, along with generations of young people in the locality, enthusiastically joined the revolution with the determination to win independence and freedom for the nation.”
Emphasizing the immense historical significance of the Đồng Khởi movement, the Standing Deputy Secretary of the Vĩnh Long Provincial Party Committee, Hồ Thị Hoàng Yến, affirmed that the Đồng Khởi flame ignited, marking the beginning of a widespread revolutionary movement throughout the South.
With ordinary people and rudimentary weapons, but driven by fervent patriotism and unwavering faith in the Party, our people rose up to break the enemy's yoke, creating a glorious milestone in the history of the Vietnamese revolution.
The spirit of the Ben Tre Uprising did not remain merely a historical memory, but continued to spread strongly throughout the newly established Vinh Long province, becoming a source of spiritual motivation and a common method of action for the entire Party committee, government, and people.
Spreading the spirit of the Đồng Khởi Uprising today means spreading the spirit of unity and social consensus; the aspiration for innovation, rapid and sustainable development. Along with that, it means spreading the mindset of daring to think, daring to act, and daring to take responsibility, determined to transform policies and resolutions into concrete actions and results.
Promoting the spirit of solidarity in building our homeland today.
After the reunification of the country, Dong Khoi commune entered a new phase facing many difficulties, heavily devastated by war, with a low economic starting point and inadequate infrastructure... However, with the spirit of Dong Khoi, the Party committee, government, and people of the commune united and worked together to rebuild their homeland.
Former Chairman of the People's Committee of Dinh Thuy commune, Le Thanh Nhan, said: "In the early years after liberation, the locality adopted the motto 'Do the easiest and least expensive tasks first,' maximizing the people's strength. Thousands of man-days of labor from officials, union members, and the people were mobilized to build roads, dig canals, and improve fields, gradually forming an infrastructure system to serve production and people's lives."
Along with that, the crop structure has been transformed towards improving economic efficiency, shifting from inefficient rice cultivation to sugarcane and coconut cultivation, which are suitable for the local natural conditions.”
On July 1, 2025, Dong Khoi commune was established by merging three communes: Dinh Thuy, Phuoc Hiep, and Binh Khanh. Following the implementation of the two-tiered local government model, despite initial difficulties, the locality, with the strong determination of the entire political system, has strived to fulfill the socio-economic development targets and tasks set forth in the commune Party Committee's Resolution for the 2020-2025 term.
Returning to Dong Khoi commune during those historic days of January, we witnessed countless changes in this revolutionary land that was once ravaged by bombs and bullets. Over the past period, the local economy has shifted in a positive direction; the proportion of agricultural labor has gradually decreased, while the proportion of labor in industry-construction and trade-services has increased; and the average per capita income is projected to reach approximately 85 million VND/person/year by the end of 2025.
A notable highlight in the area is the organic coconut farming model linked along the value chain. Farmers receive technical support for cultivation, use organic fertilizers, and their products are purchased by the cooperative at a price higher than the market rate.
According to Tran Van Dat, Director of Dinh Thuy Agricultural Cooperative: “The cooperative currently has 150 members, with an area of approximately 720 hectares of organic coconut cultivation; we purchase about 12,000 coconuts daily, creating regular jobs for about 90 local workers. Thanks to being purchased at a price 10-15% higher than the market price, members are confident in investing in production and have stable incomes.”
Building upon the revolutionary tradition of the Dong Khoi Uprising in the new era, the Party Committee, government, and people of Dong Khoi commune continue to extensively implement the "New Dong Khoi" emulation movement, linked with building a clean and strong Party and political system; promoting the application of science and technology and digital transformation; developing a green economy and circular agriculture; attracting investment in agricultural product processing; and developing eco-tourism associated with traditional culture.
From the land that was once the cradle of the Đồng Khởi movement, Đồng Khởi commune today is undergoing a strong transformation, striving for sustainable development.
(Nguyen Quoc Hung, Secretary of the Party Committee of Dong Khoi Commune)
According to Nguyen Quoc Hung, Secretary of the Party Committee of Dong Khoi commune, Dong Khoi commune, once the cradle of the Dong Khoi movement, is now undergoing a strong transformation and striving for sustainable development.
In the coming period, the locality will continue to build a clean and strong Party and political system; improve the effectiveness and efficiency of government operations; focus on developing transportation and irrigation infrastructure; improve the quality of human resources; innovate personnel work, and build a team of cadres who are virtuous, talented, and willing to think, act, and take responsibility for the benefit of the people.
With a heroic tradition, a spirit of unity, innovation, and aspiration for progress, every official, Party member, and citizen of Dong Khoi commune today is transforming their traditional pride into concrete actions, working together to build a homeland that develops faster, more sustainably, is richer, more beautiful, and more civilized, worthy of the name and heroic tradition of the Dong Khoi region.
