In the world's largest auto market, Toyota sells not one but two versions of its global best-seller, the RAV4. In addition to the RAV4, Toyota also has another option for consumers in the billion-people market, which is the Wildlander. This Toyota Wildlander SUV is produced through a joint venture with GAC in China, while its more familiar RAV4 sibling, built by Toyota in cooperation with FAW, is on sale, and the new generation Wildlander 2026 will be launched later this year.
Now, as the sixth generation of the RAV4 is making its way to Western markets, Toyota’s Chinese arm is also preparing to launch a new version of the Wildlander. The first images of the upcoming Toyota Wildlander have appeared online, via the website of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). Unlike the old model with its own front and rear design, the new generation Toyota Wildlander has an overall appearance identical to the 2026 RAV4. Of course, there are still a few technical differences. Aside from the “Wildlander” lettering on the trunk lid, this China-only C-segment SUV looks broadly similar to the RAV4 Core. This is evident from the body-colored honeycomb grille and the low-profile skid plates on both the front and rear bumpers.
Based on the leaked design, it seems that the more off-road-oriented versions of the new generation Toyota RAV4 such as the Woodland and Adventure as well as the sporty GR Sport version will not be applied to the Wildlander sold in China. According to the specifications in the documents of the management agency in China, the new Toyota Wildlander has dimensions of length x width x height of 4,600 x 1,855 x 1,680 mm and a wheelbase of 2,690 mm. These figures are basically similar to the Toyota RAV4 sold in Europe and North America. The biggest difference between the Toyota Wildlander and the 2026 RAV4 is under the hood. While the global RAV4 has gone all-electric, the Chinese-market Wildlander retains the traditional gasoline engine option.
Specifically, the standard version of the Toyota Wildlander 2026 uses a 2.0L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder gasoline engine, with a maximum capacity of 169 horsepower, with the option of front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. In addition, the car has two self-charging hybrid versions. The first is a hybrid powertrain with a 2.0L 4-cylinder gasoline engine, producing a maximum capacity of 150 horsepower. The second is a hybrid powertrain with a 2.5L gasoline engine, producing a maximum capacity of 182 horsepower. Both are combined with an electric motor, front-wheel drive or E-Four four-wheel drive. Toyota has not yet equipped the plug-in hybrid powertrain (PHEV) for the "twin brother" of the RAV4.
