85 - 90% of organic waste is treated at the source, limiting small waste collection points in residential areas, fresh air, clean and beautiful rural landscapes... are the results achieved by the organic waste classification and treatment model implemented by Long Hung commune (Van Giang) in the past nearly 2 years.
Currently, Long Hung commune has over 15,400 people with over 4,500 households. According to the commune's estimate, the average amount of organic waste discharged into the environment in the commune is about 1.5 tons/day, inorganic waste is 2.3 tons/day. On holidays and Tet, the amount of waste increases by about 20 - 30% compared to normal days.
To protect the rural environment and reduce pressure on waste treatment units in the province, Long Hung commune has stepped up propaganda and mobilized people to classify and treat waste at source. Accordingly, the district and commune have distributed over 5,600 18-liter waste containers to people. Up to now, 100% of households in the commune have classified organic and inorganic waste separately; over 3,800 households have effectively treated organic waste at home, accounting for over 86% of the total number of households in the commune.
For the amount of waste generated into the environment, the commune assigns the Long Hung Commune Trade, Service and General Cooperative to collect it. To facilitate the treatment, organic waste will be collected on even days of the week, and inorganic waste will be collected on odd days. For households that do not classify, the Cooperative will resolutely not collect and transport the waste for treatment.
Mr. Nguyen Van Manh in Long Hung commune said: Classifying waste right at home has helped each individual be aware of environmental protection, creating convenience for transporting and handling each type of waste. For my family, organic waste is used with biological products to compost as fertilizer for plants.
Every day, Long Hung Commune Trade and Service Cooperative uses specialized vehicles to collect waste, avoiding the situation of wastewater flowing onto the street. Transported waste will be gathered in 2 separate locations containing inorganic waste and organic waste, suitable for each processing line. For inorganic waste, the line will separate plastic bags, paper, iron, cups, packaging, plastics, etc. for recycling. Waste such as rubber, needles, glass, etc. will be sorted separately, waiting for the truck to roll and crush it for processing. The organic waste processing line includes 1 conveyor belt, 1 2-shaft crusher, the waste will be crushed into small particles, combined with the function of watering cultured microorganisms to shorten the composting time to make fertilizer and sell to households growing fruit trees and vegetables in and outside the district.
Although many results have been achieved in the work of classifying and treating waste at source, during the implementation process, the locality still encounters some difficulties because the waste classification bins distributed to households have been used for many years, so some bins are broken; some households living near canals and ditches still throw their waste wherever it is convenient. In addition, the locality is currently facing difficulties in planning locations for waste collection and treatment. The reason is that the location of the previously planned waste collection site is no longer consistent with the district's zoning plan...
Ms. Nguyen Thi Nga, Vice Chairman of Long Hung Commune People's Committee said: To overcome the above situation, in the coming time, the locality has a plan to expand the waste disposal area in Nhan Vuc village from 1,000 m2 up to 5 thousand m2 , allocating funds to buy tools to support households in sorting and treating waste at source. In addition, the commune assigned organizations and unions to continue to expand and take care of flower and tree roads to create green space for residential areas in the commune, limiting the situation of littering.
