DTO - Keeping up with the global trend of clean and safe production, in recent years, many farmers in Phu Huu commune have proactively converted to organic and VietGAP agricultural production models. This shift not only helps farmers save significantly on production costs and increase income, but also contributes significantly to building a sustainable and effective agriculture ...
Mr. Nguyen Van Duc (Tan Phu hamlet, Phu Huu commune) uses IMO yeast to ferment fish as fertilizer for crops, contributing to reducing production costs and improving the quality of agricultural products.
IMO - helps reduce costs, increase productivity of fruit orchards
In August 2023, with the support of the Farmers' Association of Dong Thap province, 35 households in Phu Huu commune (formerly An Nhon commune) participated in the model " Dong Thap farmers reuse organic household waste and agricultural by-products to create biological products for production". After nearly 2 years of implementation, the model has brought about quite obvious results, more importantly, people's awareness has changed positively...
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Duc, resident of Tan Phu hamlet, Phu Huu commune, through training sessions, he and many households in the commune were informed by technical staff about the harmful effects of overusing inorganic fertilizers and pesticides in the production process on the environment and human health. Therefore, when the locality implemented the IMO model (organic composting method, using beneficial microorganisms to decompose organic matter, creating a source of nutrients for plants), he registered to participate and applied it right away in his garden.
The IMO model helps Phu Huu farmers reduce 20-30% of production costs by using homemade fertilizers from organic waste, while improving farming efficiency.
The process of composting IMO (from bean dregs, leftover vegetables, straw) for jackfruit gardens, Mr. Duc realized that it has many advantages compared to traditional production methods such as: lush green trees, many fruits, less tree loss compared to traditional farming. In particular, it helps gardeners reduce production costs by 20-30%. "I and other households in the commune are continuing to mobilize people to maintain and develop the model, aiming to build a clean agricultural model, as a practical tourist attraction to introduce to tourists when visiting An Nhon islet area" - Mr. Duc shared.
Organic Durian - A Potential Direction
Similarly, facing the development trend and increasing demand of consumers, Phu Huu Durian Cooperative chose to produce organically, with clear traceability, which is highly appreciated by businesses.
Instructed by the cooperative on safe durian cultivation techniques, in 2020, Mr. Tran Thanh Lam (Phu Hung Hamlet, Phu Huu Commune) boldly applied the safe production process on 0.3 hectares of his family's durian. Mr. Lam strictly adheres to the requirements for safe cultivation, including keeping a production diary and using organic fertilizers for crops. Thanks to that, his durian garden not only maintains its productivity but also achieves outstanding quality. Mr. Lam shared: "The yield may be equivalent to or slightly higher than the traditional growing method, but in return, the durian trees grow stably and have better vitality."
Mr. Tran Thanh Lam's durian garden (Phu Hung hamlet, Phu Huu commune) achieves high productivity and outstanding quality thanks to the application of organic production processes and VietGAP, meeting market demand.
Currently, Phu Huu durian is receiving great attention from businesses. Ms. Vo Thi Bach Le - Director of Huynh Lam Fertilizer Joint Stock Company, said that over the past 5 years, the company has cooperated with Phu Huu durian cooperative to supply organic fertilizer and provide cultivation instructions for gardeners. Realizing that Phu Huu durian quality meets standards, the company has cooperated to purchase and distribute to major supermarket systems nationwide such as: Winmart, Coopmart, Big C, Annam Gourmet, Finelife. Ms. Le commented that the demand for durian as gifts, especially in the Central provinces, is very large. With an output of 100 tons/month, the company currently wants to expand its cooperation to spread out the crop, ensuring year-round supply.
According to Mr. Le Thanh Dien - Director of Phu Huu Durian Cooperative, the Cooperative currently has 35 members, an area of over 200 hectares, most of the members produce organically and have stable output. In the coming time, the Cooperative will continue to expand the area of organic durian, VietGAP, to meet export requirements, and at the same time, move towards building the Phu Huu durian brand, linking with consuming enterprises, helping members feel secure in production.
Durian in the garden is strictly inspected by businesses for quality before harvest, ensuring the product meets standards for distribution in major supermarket systems.
Sustainable agricultural development
According to Mr. Vo Cong Truong - Vice Chairman of Phu Huu Commune People's Committee, the whole commune has 3,970.7 hectares of fruit trees, mainly focusing on durian, longan and rambutan... In recent times, the locality has reorganized production, encouraged farmers and cooperatives to proactively switch to clean, safe farming models, bringing high economic efficiency.
Notable models are: “Producing longan in a safe direction” of An Hoa Safe Longan Cooperative, “Growing durian in a VietGAP direction” at Phu Huu Durian Cooperative. In particular, the model “Dong Thap farmers reuse organic household waste and agricultural by-products to create biological products for production” (IMO) has proven to be clearly effective in reducing production costs (saving about 60 million VND/ha/year) and changing people's awareness of environmental protection.
To continue to increase the value and sustainable output of agricultural products, Mr. Vo Cong Truong - Vice Chairman of Phu Huu Commune People's Committee said that in the coming time, in addition to focusing on expanding effective clean agricultural models, the locality will strengthen training in clean farming techniques, especially for key crops such as durian, longan, rambutan, according to VietGAP, organic, IMO processes; promote links with businesses and consumer cooperatives, aiming at production according to orders; support the issuance of growing area codes and traceability; advise on support policies on seeds, organic fertilizers, microbial fertilizers and certification costs to encourage people to switch to organic agricultural models.
In addition to technical support, Phu Huu commune focuses on building and developing OCOP products, completing dossiers and promoting key products such as Phu Huu durian and Chau Thanh longan. The commune will develop collective brands "Chau Thanh longan" and "Phu Huu durian"; apply digital transformation in trade promotion; support cooperatives and production groups to use e-commerce platforms and social networks to reach consumers...
