Identifying Vietnam U20's opponents in the 'group of death'

On the afternoon of May 28th, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) held the draw for the 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers at its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The draw placed Vietnam U20 (seeded number 2) in Group C alongside Iran, North Korea, and Palestine.

Among the contenders, the Iranian U20 team is considered the strongest candidate for the top spot in the group. The West Asian representative is in the top seed group, possesses a well-structured youth training system, and regularly participates in continental finals. Not only are they superior in physique and fitness, but the Iranian youth teams also stand out for their disciplined playing style and extensive international experience.

Besides that, North Korea is also a formidable opponent. Their football is always highly regarded in the continent thanks to their excellent physical fitness, fierce fighting spirit, and highly organized style of play. The remaining team, Palestine, remains a difficult opponent despite not being among the top seeded teams, especially given their significant progress in recent years.

To achieve high results in continental competitions, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) is focusing on thoroughly preparing the Vietnam U20 team both professionally and psychologically. Currently, the core squad is being refined through training camps and international competitions. The upcoming U19 Southeast Asian Championship in Indonesia in June will be a crucial opportunity for the players to gain experience, get used to pressure, and improve their competitive spirit. Being selected as one of the host nations for the qualifying group stage also provides a significant advantage for Coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's team.

The 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers will feature 32 teams, divided into 8 groups of 4 teams each, playing a round-robin format at designated venues from August 31st to September 6th. At the end of the qualifiers, the top 8 teams and the 7 best-performing second-placed teams will qualify for the finals, which will be held in China in March of the following year.

Notably, the 2027 AFC U20 Championship will be the first time the AFC has adopted a two-tiered competition model, comprising a qualifying phase and a development phase.

In the qualifying round, the 32 highest-ranked teams compete for a spot in the finals, as is customary.

In the development phase, the 12 teams ranked lower compete separately to gain experience and improve their skills. The 6 teams ranked fourth with the worst performance in the qualifying phase will be relegated to the development phase. Conversely, the 6 teams from the development phase will be promoted to the next U20 Asian Championship qualifying round.
