E10 gasoline has appeared, will E5 gasoline still be sold?

According to Circular No. 50/2025/TT-BCT dated November 7, 2025, unleaded gasoline conforming to current national technical standards will have to be blended into E10 gasoline for use in gasoline engines nationwide starting from June 1st.

However, to ensure that all types of vehicles have access to this fuel, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will continue to maintain the availability of E5 RON92 gasoline until December 31, 2030.

According to Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan, assessments by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), the Vietnam Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (VAMM), the Vietnam Registering and Inspection Department, and various automobile and motorcycle manufacturers and assemblers indicate that most cars and motorcycles currently in circulation in Vietnam can use E10 gasoline. Some exceptions include a line of light trucks manufactured between 1996 and 2023 and some motorcycles.

To avoid the risk of some very old vehicles being incompatible with E10 gasoline, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has decided to continue maintaining E5 RON92 gasoline. E5 and E10 gasoline are biofuels blended from mineral gasoline, with ethanol ratios of 5% and 10% respectively.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade assesses that the use of biofuels helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, decrease dependence on fossil fuels, contribute to environmental protection, and fulfill Vietnam's commitment to achieving net CO2 emissions of "zero" by 2050.

E5 gasoline is a mixture of 95% traditional mineral gasoline (such as RON92) blended with 5% bioethanol. This fuel has good anti-knock properties, helping the engine run smoothly and burn fuel more completely.

From January 1, 2018, E5 gasoline was officially used nationwide, completely replacing RON92 gasoline. Prior to that, E5 bio-gasoline was first introduced to the market by Petro Vietnam in September 2008. However, after only a short time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade temporarily suspended its sale.

At that time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade stated that because Vietnam did not yet have standards for this product, more time was needed for testing, impact assessment, and completion of registration procedures to publish appropriate standards.
