Green energy transition
In fact, many countries around the world have widely used E10 bioethanol for many years as a solution to reduce emissions, protect the environment, and diversify energy sources. In Vietnam, both conventional gasoline and bioethanol have been applied simultaneously to allow people time to get used to them, the market to adapt, and businesses to gradually improve their distribution infrastructure, technology, and supply sources.
On December 22, 2012, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 53 on the roadmap for applying the blending ratio of biofuels with traditional fuels. This decision stipulated that after a trial period, from December 1, 2015, gasoline produced, blended, and sold for use in road motor vehicles nationwide would be E5 gasoline. By December 1, 2017, gasoline produced, blended, and sold for use in road motor vehicles nationwide would be E10 gasoline. However, in practice, maintaining too many types of fuel simultaneously for an extended period creates many drawbacks, such as: increased logistics, storage, and distribution costs; difficulties for retail businesses; and reduced effectiveness of the green energy transition policy.

Aiming to ensure energy security and promote green and sustainable development, the Ministry of Industry and Trade issued Circular No. 50/2025/TT-BCT dated November 7, 2025, stipulating the roadmap for applying the blending ratio of biofuels with traditional fuels in Vietnam. This circular stipulates that from June 1, 2026, biofuel gasoline will be distributed nationwide. This roadmap follows the policies of the Party and State, including Resolution No. 55-NQ/TW of the Politburo on the orientation of the National Energy Development Strategy of Vietnam to 2030, with a vision to 2045; and Resolution No. 70-NQ/TW, dated August 20, 2025, of the Politburo on ensuring national energy security to 2030, with a vision to 2045.
The official nationwide transition to E10 bioethanol from June 1, 2026, is the next step in implementing the biofuel roadmap in accordance with Decision 53, aligning with practical requirements, legal basis, and the Party and Government's policies on energy transition, building a green economy, and reducing carbon emissions.
Meanwhile, E5 RON92 gasoline will continue to be used until the end of 2030 to suit older vehicles and the needs of the people. Thus, the use of biofuel is not an imposed decision or an attempt to restrict people's choices, but stems from the requirements of sustainable development, ensuring energy security, protecting the environment, and fulfilling Vietnam's international commitments on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Petrolimex Son La has E10 gasoline fully stocked.
Introducing E10 bioethanol fuel earlier than planned, at the end of April 2026, Petrolimex Son La Co., Ltd. (Petrolimex Son La) officially launched the sale of E10 RON95 bioethanol fuel (referred to as E10) at its retail outlets throughout the province.

Petrol Station No. 1 in Thuan Chau commune is one of the first four units of Petrolimex Son La to implement the sale of E10 bioethanol fuel. Ms. Nguyen Thu Trang, Station Manager of Petrol Station No. 1, Son La, said: "The station has fully prepared the necessary technical infrastructure and ensured a reliable supply of fuel. Our staff proactively introduces the new bioethanol fuel, provides advice, and answers all questions, helping customers feel more confident when using the product."
To inform customers, Petrolimex Son La has displayed banners promoting the benefits of E10 bioethanol fuel at 100% of its affiliated stores, ensuring all customers understand the transition process. Simultaneously, they have trained staff to promptly address concerns about technical characteristics, fuel efficiency, and engine compatibility, eliminating hesitation and building consumer trust. They have also intensified social media communication to create widespread awareness. Furthermore, they closely monitor market feedback and thoroughly evaluate technical specifications to ensure optimal service quality.

Petrolimex Son La currently has 46 directly owned stores and manages 33 franchised stores. Immediately upon receiving directives from the Group and new regulations from the Ministry of Industry and Trade and Son La province, the unit reviewed its entire infrastructure system and developed a comprehensive conversion plan to ensure a stable and safe supply and prevent disruption to business operations.
Mr. Pham Ba Tien, Acting Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Petrolimex Son La, stated: "Having proactively developed a plan to deploy E10 gasoline sales, 100% of the company's stores have now implemented E10 gasoline sales. The widespread availability of E10 gasoline across Petrolimex Son La's entire store system demonstrates the company's responsiveness in its clean energy development strategy, aligning with Son La province's green growth and sustainable development goals."
E10 gasoline offers many benefits.
Petrol Station No. 3 in Thuan Chau commune has been selling E10 gasoline for nearly two months now. Mr. Luong Son La, the station manager, said: "Initially, many people were concerned about the quality of E10 gasoline, but after a detailed explanation, most customers agreed to use it. Since the trial sale began, we haven't received any negative feedback from customers."
One of the biggest challenges when widely deploying a new product is consumer apprehension. Many vehicle owners are still concerned about the safety, engine performance, and fuel consumption of E10 gasoline compared to traditional mineral gasoline.
Mr. Do Ngoc Su, from To Hieu ward, shared: "Initially, I was a little hesitant when I heard about switching to E10 gasoline. However, after being advised by the store staff and using it in practice, I found that the vehicle still operates stably, with no difference compared to before. I think using environmentally friendly fuel that helps reduce emissions is a necessary trend, and I strongly support it."

From a professional perspective, Mr. Pham Ngoc Tuan, Head of Technical and Investment Management Department, Petrolimex Son La, shared: E10 bioethanol fuel consists of approximately 10% ethanol and 90% mineral gasoline. While the ethanol blending ratio of 10% is relatively low, it is sufficient to improve some fuel properties. Ethanol contains oxygen, which helps the combustion process in the engine to be more complete and cleaner. As a result, combustion efficiency is improved, contributing to better engine performance. Using E10 fuel in current vehicle models poses no significant concerns. Consumers can confidently use it according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Furthermore, a clear benefit of E10 gasoline is reduced emissions. Harmful substances, such as carbon monoxide (CO) and some unburned organic compounds, are significantly reduced. This contributes to environmental protection and public health.
The deployment of E10 bioethanol is not only a national requirement but also a crucial step in the green energy development strategy. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hoang, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, stated that the Department is coordinating with relevant agencies and units to promote information and communication to ensure that people and businesses understand E10 bioethanol correctly and fully. Simultaneously, they are addressing concerns and questions related to fuel quality, compatibility, and safety during use, contributing to greater social consensus.
With the consensus of regulatory agencies, thorough preparation by businesses, and trust from consumers, the roadmap for adopting E10 biofuel will certainly create a major impetus, contributing to environmental protection, reducing emissions, and building a green and sustainable future.
