Linkage in agricultural production has now become an important link in the production chain of each locality. In particular, in the context of market demand gradually shifting towards quality over quantity, improving the quality of agricultural products has also become a "survival" factor for each enterprise and farmer.

Win-win

If in the past, Bac Lieu only built specialized areas for high-quality rice production, producing according to specific consumption addresses, now, shrimp - one of the province's main livestock - has also been given attention, creating conditions to form farming areas according to standards, quality and requirements of enterprises. From this direction, it has paved the way for Bac Lieu shrimp to "swim far". Currently, Bac Lieu has more than 1,000 hectares implementing chain linkage, meeting international standards such as: GlobalGAP, ASC, Organic, Natural Land. Mr. Duong Minh Doan (Cay Gia Hamlet, Dinh Thanh Commune, Dong Hai District) shared: “Although production according to the required process and techniques is a bit more difficult than before, in return, farmed shrimp after harvest has a specific consumption address, the price is much higher than the price of shrimp raised by the old method, so the income of shrimp farmers increases significantly. In addition, with environmentally friendly farming methods, the farm still maintains its original natural conditions, trees grow well, and the landscape is preserved.”

Not only intensive shrimp farming is chosen as raw material areas for partners such as companies and enterprises, but currently, many shrimp farming households using super intensive farming methods and applying high technology have gradually built up linkage chains and produced according to new processes and standards. According to Mr. Pham Van Chu - a shrimp farming household in Vinh Trach Dong commune (Bac Lieu city): "High-tech shrimp farming requires high techniques and costs. Linking and creating stable output will help shrimp farmers feel more secure when starting a new crop. In addition, production according to mandatory processes and standards also helps people gradually form environmentally friendly farming habits, aiming for sustainable production".

Linking production chains also brings many benefits to businesses. Because of the increasingly high demands of the market on farming areas, quality of raw materials, impacts of farming activities on the environment, etc., shrimp purchasing and exporting businesses have to link with farmers to manage the quality of commercial shrimp, building to meet international standards. After forming a linked production area according to high-tech processes, the products of the businesses linked with farmers will have a great competitive advantage in the market. Mr. Tran Be Sau - Executive Director of Viet - Uc Seafood Factory, said: "Building a raw material area helps businesses take the initiative in sourcing goods as well as being able to produce according to the processes and standards of each market to expand production, expand the market, build the brand of Bac Lieu shrimp in particular, the whole country in general in the international market".

sustainable link

In the past 3 years, Bac Lieu has focused on investing in developing infrastructure systems such as: transportation, irrigation and electricity to serve the development of the shrimp farming industry. In particular, regularly dredging and clearing canals, meeting the demand of about 75 - 80% for shrimp farming areas; completing and putting into use 25 power lines, serving more than 15,000 households. In addition, the province has also completed and put into use 3 pilot projects to invest in power grids to serve intensive and semi-intensive farming in Bac Lieu city, Hoa Binh district and Dong Hai district. In parallel, many sea routes with large tonnage have been upgraded and expanded, meeting the demand and facilitating the transportation of aquatic products for processing or consumption.

Bac Lieu has one of the highest commercial shrimp outputs in the country, but processing plants are very limited, mostly small-scale and outsourced, so they only use about 50% of the province's shrimp raw materials. Encouraging and supporting enterprises to link production with shrimp farmers to invest in developing raw material areas according to international standards; at the same time, investing in the processing industry and applying a food safety quality management system according to international standards is an important direction that the province focuses on developing. Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee - Pham Van Thieu, said: "It is expected that from now until the end of the year, shrimp exports of Vietnam in general, and Bac Lieu province in particular, will continue to face many difficulties when competing with markets with strengths in shrimp farming such as Ecuador and India, as well as political instability in the world. Along with that, the price of imported shrimp on the world market decreasing and being lower than the price of raw shrimp in the country will cause significant obstacles for the shrimp export industry. Therefore, linking the chain to affirm the Bac Lieu shrimp brand will be one of the important steps to create a difference from common shrimp products to increase value as well as increase opportunities for shrimp products in the export market".
