This statement was made at the workshop "Realizing 'Green' Social Housing" held this morning (August 22nd) in Ho Chi Minh City, organized by Saigon Economic Magazine in collaboration with FiCO Tay Ninh Cement Joint Stock Company.

At the workshop, experts and businesses argued that building "green" social housing and implementing sustainable real estate projects is not only a practical step for businesses and the government to fulfill the Net Zero commitment by 2050, but also helps businesses expand their operations. Currently, sustainability and environmental friendliness are increasingly considered important factors by customers and partners in decision-making, thereby contributing to boosting purchasing power.

Mr. Ha Quang Hung, Deputy Director of the Department of Housing and Real Estate Market Management (Ministry of Construction), said that in addition to issuing Decision No. 2161/QD-TTg, the Prime Minister has assigned ministries and agencies to supplement mechanisms and policies to encourage and incentivize individuals and organizations to participate in the development of green, energy-saving, and low-emission housing.

"The development of green, energy-efficient buildings has been addressed through resolutions issued by Vietnam's highest authorities. Therefore, it is clear that implementing energy-saving projects in general, and green housing projects in particular, is extremely urgent at this time," Mr. Ha Quang Hung affirmed.

Regarding the view that developing "green" social housing will incur higher construction costs, Mr. Vu Linh Quang, a member of the Board of Directors of the Vietnam Green Building Council, argues that greening social housing does not cost businesses anything. Currently, suppliers of equipment and materials can provide "green" materials at reasonable prices, requiring only optimal design solutions.

"On average, 'green' housing now typically costs less than 1% of the total investment. Even if we have solutions for low-rise buildings, the cost might not increase. This completely depends on the design consulting team, the materials supply team, and the construction contractor. All these factors combined will not increase the cost of 'green' social housing," said Mr. Vu Linh Quang.
