Building the brand for Mắt Biếc rice.

HNN - Phu Thuan Agricultural Production and Service Cooperative (abbreviated as Phu Thuan Cooperative), located in Ha Cang village, Dan Dien commune (formed by the merger of Quang Thai, Quang Loi, Quang Vinh, and Quang Phu communes), in addition to providing modernized agricultural services, has gradually built a brand for Mat Biec rice, which has now been certified as a 3-star OCOP product.

Mắt Biếc rice contributes to affirming the quality of local rice.

Mr. Tran Minh Ich, Director of Phu Thuan Cooperative, said that currently, Mat Biec rice is produced from 15 hectares of HG12 rice variety that meets VietGAP standards. Building a unique Hue rice brand in the market, amidst many already well-known rice brands in the Mekong Delta, is no easy task. Therefore, all cooperative members are committed to cultivating rice according to proper techniques and standards, from spraying pesticides to fertilizing. HG12 rice, under the Mat Biec brand, is a fragrant, moderately sticky, and soft rice that sells very well in the domestic market, especially in collective kitchens and surrounding areas.

The HG12 rice variety used to produce Mắt Biếc rice is a short-day variety favored by many farmers due to its vigorous growth and high yield, averaging 6-7 tons/ha. With its good resistance to harsh weather conditions, HG12 has quickly become a preferred choice in many rice-growing regions. Furthermore, this variety produces fragrant and delicious rice, meeting both domestic and export demands. Moreover, HG12 rice is resistant to common pests and diseases such as brown planthopper, blast, and yellow dwarf. Thanks to these characteristics, farmers have minimized the use of pesticides, contributing to environmental protection and saving production costs. Compared to many other rice varieties on the market, Mắt Biếc rice is not excessively expensive, ranging from 16,000 to 18,000 VND/kg.

Regarding the name "Blue Eyes," Mr. Ich added: "The reason we chose the name 'Blue Eyes' is because the lonely tree in the famous movie 'Blue Eyes' is located in Ha Cang village. Furthermore, the Đo Đo Primary School in the film was built at the cooperative's headquarters, so we wanted to use the name 'Blue Eyes' to partly preserve those beautiful cultural values."

Mr. Thai Phuoc, 55 years old, from Bao La Duc Nhuan village, a member of the cooperative, said: "My family is growing one acre of rice, mainly the HG12 variety. After harvesting and drying the rice, we sell it to the cooperative. Thanks to this, the price of rice is always stable. When the cooperative built the Mat Biec rice brand and achieved OCOP 3-star standard, we were very happy. Happy because we also contributed a small part, always strictly adhering to the production and cultivation process so that every grain of rice milled meets the standard."

Not only with Mắt Biếc rice, but to gradually enhance the value of rice produced by farmers, Phu Thuan Cooperative has built a high-quality rice brand, applying science, technology, and digital technology to production and consumption. The cooperative also focuses on applying farming practices that minimize emissions and are environmentally friendly so that rice products meet the standards and criteria as regulated and satisfy the green consumption needs of customers.

Mr. Tran Minh Ich, Director of the Cooperative, said that after building a brand for local rice products, the Cooperative also focused on standardizing rice quality, as well as investing in designing and innovating packaging and providing clear and transparent product information. Thanks to this, the Cooperative's products are gradually gaining access to the market. During the process of building a brand for local rice, the Cooperative received support and cooperation from the government and relevant departments at all levels. All costs to complete the procedures for VietGAP rice growing area certification, OCOP 3-star certification, and trademark registration were subsidized. Farmers also received 50% support for seeds and fertilizers.
