Ambulance weaves through small alley to save old woman in cardiac arrest

A 75-year-old woman suddenly had a cardiac arrest. Because the patient's house was small and had a lot of traffic, doctors used a two-wheeled vehicle to save her.

On March 31, Dr. Nguyen Duy Long - Director of the 115 Emergency Center - said that the unit has made efforts to save the patient with cardiac arrest by providing first aid instructions over the phone and deploying a two-wheeled ambulance.

Previously, on March 21, the 115 emergency hotline received an emergency call from an address in Co Giang ward, District 1 about a female patient, about 75 years old, who turned purple and unconscious after eating.

After reassuring the caller, the dispatcher determined that the patient had stopped breathing and immediately instructed the caller to perform CPR over the phone.

Along with first aid instructions, the coordinator quickly connected with the Saigon General Hospital satellite station to access the scene.

After receiving the information, the hospital assessed this as an emergency situation and the patient's home area had a small road with frequent traffic, so they immediately sent a team of 1 doctor and 1 nurse in a two-wheeled ambulance carrying medicine and specialized medical supplies to the scene quickly within 5 minutes.

At the scene, the patient was lying in front of the porch and was still being given CPR by his family according to instructions over the phone from the 115 hotline.

Upon examination, it was noted that there was a state of respiratory arrest suspected to be due to aspiration. The team performed advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation. At the same time, an ambulance and a team from the hospital were quickly dispatched to the scene along with an ambulance team on a two-wheeled vehicle.

After 10 minutes of resuscitation, the patient's heartbeat returned just as the ambulance arrived at the scene to transport the patient to the hospital.

Here, the patient continued to receive intensive care and treatment. After a day, the patient was awake, able to communicate, was being taken off the ventilator, and was in stable health.

Doctor Nguyen Duy Long said that the case of a patient with cardiac arrest was saved thanks to the combination of two methods: first aid instructions via phone and the deployment of a two-wheeled ambulance, once again affirming the important role of applying technology and creative, effective solutions in emergency work.

When direct medical intervention cannot arrive in time, first aid instructions over the phone have given the patient a chance to survive, helping to maintain heart function during the golden time, until a two-wheeled ambulance can quickly reach the scene.

Since May 2019, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has officially deployed two-wheeled ambulances across the city to serve the emergency needs of the people.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health assessed that when this type of emergency is put into operation, emergency access to patients will certainly be faster, especially in central areas of the city with many small alleys and traffic jams to meet the golden rule in emergency patient care.
