At around 6:30 a.m., a truck carrying several barrels of gasoline was traveling north-south on Highway 1. When it reached Van Phuoc Commune, smoke billowed from the back of the truck. The driver panicked and drove into an empty lot on the side of the road, then opened the door to escape.

The fire then engulfed the entire truck, and the medium-voltage power line above was affected by the fire and broke, lying across the road. The 59-year-old man ran to pull the power line off Highway 1 but was electrocuted to death.

The driver suffered burns and was taken to hospital for treatment. The truck was burned to the metal frame and the windows were shattered. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
