Investigators stand next to the Tesla Cybertruck that exploded outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas on January 1.
ABC News quoted an official involved in the investigation as saying the vehicle was carrying a type of projectile resembling fireworks. Investigators are urgently verifying the motive and whether the driver intentionally detonated the explosives.
According to the same station, police are investigating the possibility that the explosion was an act of crime and terrorism.
Police sealed off the scene.
The Cybertruck is a model from the electric car company Tesla, whose CEO is billionaire Elon Musk. Musk, an advisor to President-elect Donald Trump, believes the explosion was not caused by the vehicle.
"We have confirmed that the explosion was caused by a very large quantity of fireworks and/or a bomb being carried in the rented Cybertruck and was not related to the vehicle. All vehicle operational data was good at the time of the explosion," Musk wrote on social media.

The Trump Hotel in Las Vegas is owned by the Trump Organization, which belongs to the President-elect. The explosion occurred just hours after a man drove a truck into a crowd in New Orleans, Louisiana, killing 15 people. The FBI said it found an explosive device in the vehicle used in the attack.
Meanwhile, security sources say the Cybertruck that exploded in Las Vegas was rented through the Turo app, similar to the vehicle involved in the New Orleans crash.
