The written word is not only a "spring blessing" but also a message about learning, personal responsibility, and progress.

Since ancient times, at the beginning of each year, people would seek out scholars to "request" calligraphy, hoping for a peaceful and prosperous new year. Characters like "Happiness," "Prosperity," "Longevity," "Peace," "Heart," and "Virtue" not only carried blessings but also served as admonitions to live virtuously, diligently, and persistently.

According to cultural researchers, the custom of "asking" for calligraphy at the beginning of the new year is not simply a tradition, but also a way for Vietnamese people to express their hopes for a peaceful year, academic progress, and successful careers. It is not just a "spring blessing," but also a message about learning, personal responsibility, and a spirit of progress.

Amidst the vibrant atmosphere of the Lunar New Year fair at Vo Nguyen Giap Square, the calligraphy booth of Ms. Hoang Thi Phuong, pen name Linh Phuong, attracted many visitors, especially young people.

Vu Tu Anh, residing in Phan Dinh Phung ward and currently a student at the People's Police Academy, said: "I just 'asked' for the word 'Achievement' for myself. The word 'Achievement' serves as a reminder for myself to persevere and strive for success in my studies and career..." The young student spoke with eyes full of confidence and hope for the new year.

According to artisan Hoang Thi Phuong, who has been involved in calligraphy activities at spring festivals in Thai Nguyen for many years: At the beginning of the year, people often "ask" for characters like "Peace," "Heart," "Happiness," "Virtue," "Patience," "Filial Piety," etc. Each person who comes to "ask" for calligraphy carries a different wish. Some wish for peace for their family, some pray for a successful career, and some simply want to maintain inner peace.

Vietnamese calligraphy is not only a form of aesthetic expression, but also a continuation and renewal of tradition, contributing to the dissemination of national cultural values in modern life.

As one of the familiar "calligraphy masters" at cultural events, Ms. Linh Phuong not only writes and gives away calligraphy but also teaches many generations of students who love the art of calligraphy. For her, it's not just about creating strokes, but also about spreading love for the Vietnamese language and preserving national identity. "I am Vietnamese, I love Vietnamese calligraphy, so I want to spread that love to more people, especially young people," Ms. Linh Phuong shared.

In fact, in recent years, the movement to learn and practice Vietnamese calligraphy has been growing. While calligraphy was previously often associated with Chinese and Nom characters, modern Vietnamese calligraphy has now established its own unique position, suitable for contemporary life. Calligraphy clubs and experiential classes for students are widely organized. Many young people turn to calligraphy as a way to balance their minds amidst the hustle and bustle of work.

For many parents, taking their children to receive calligraphy blessings at the beginning of the year is also a gentle way to educate them about tradition and knowledge. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoang Nguyen, from Tich Luong ward, said that every year she brings her children to the calligraphy space. She herself requested the character "Tam" (Heart/Mind) with the hope that her family will always maintain inner peace and to remind herself to slow down amidst the hustle and bustle of life. "I want my children to understand that knowledge and character are always the most important foundations," Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoang Nguyen shared.

The presence of young people in spaces dedicated to "requesting" and "giving" calligraphy during the early days of spring shows Vietnamese calligraphy as a cultural highlight amidst modern life. There, people not only "request" calligraphy but also seek a moment of tranquility and profound reflection for their souls. Each calligraphic character written at the beginning of the new year is a wish, a belief, a motivation for the year ahead. As the artist puts pen to paper, each delicate and bold stroke emerges, reflecting the wishes of those seeking the calligraphy for peace, success, and good fortune. In that moment, amidst the bustling festive atmosphere, the pace slows down, allowing for reflection on one's hopes and aspirations.
