In late December, as the spirit of spring spread everywhere, the atmosphere at key transportation projects such as Phong Chau Bridge, the road connecting Hung Vuong Street to Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, Phu Dong Street to Au Co Street (Viet Tri City)... was bustling, with the sound of machinery echoing. Officers and soldiers of the 12th Army Corps and engineers and workers from many units were focusing on accelerating construction progress to ensure the projects met deadlines and were completed on schedule.
The contractors constructing the Phong Chau bridge are concentrating their manpower and equipment, working continuously in three shifts per day to ensure the project's progress.
Construction continues throughout the Lunar New Year holiday on the Phong Chau bridge project.
The investment project for the construction of the new Phong Chau Bridge on National Highway 32C in Phu Tho province has a total investment of VND 635.392 billion, with the Thang Long Project Management Board assigned as the investor. The project has a length of approximately 652.88m, starting from Km0+00 (approximately Km21+50.0/National Highway 32C bypass around Viet Tri city), located in Phung Nguyen commune, Lam Thao district; and ending at Km0+652.88 (approximately Km18+551.4/National Highway 32C), located in Van Xuan commune, Tam Nong district. The Phong Chau bridge itself is approximately 383.3m long (to the end of the abutments); the approach roads connecting to the existing roads on the Lam Thao side are approximately 113.8m long, and on the Tam Nong side approximately 155.78m long. The bridge's width of 20.5m matches the roadbed width, accommodating 4 lanes for motorized vehicles and 2 lanes for non-motorized vehicles.
The early reconstruction of Phong Chau Bridge has received close attention and guidance from General Secretary To Lam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh , and other Party and State leaders. Given its urgency, the Prime Minister decided to allow the construction of the new Phong Chau Bridge under an emergency construction order and required its completion and commissioning in 2025.
In that spirit, the Ministry of Transport has focused and decisively directed relevant agencies and units to work urgently and with the highest sense of responsibility to approve the project and complete the procedures in accordance with the law to implement the project in the shortest possible time.
Immediately after the Minister of Transport issued the order to commence construction (December 21, 2024), the contractors began work on the project. To ensure the project's completion on schedule, during the Lunar New Year holiday of 2025, nearly 100 officials, workers, and machinery from the 12th Army Corps, Ministry of National Defense, continued to operate as usual. Along with the construction of the substructure and pile foundations for the bridge, the dismantling of the old bridge to clear the site for the new bridge was also carried out urgently and decisively. Thanks to the implementation of a "3 shifts, 4 teams" construction plan, there were always people working on the construction site, and at night, the lights illuminated a whole stretch of the river. The entire team of contractors, from the project manager, engineers, mechanics, and workers, were determined to stay and celebrate the New Year on the construction site.
Speaking on behalf of the Phong Chau Bridge Construction Command, Lieutenant Colonel Nham Manh Don, Deputy Director of the Truong Son 9 Project Management Board, Truong Son Construction Corporation, Ministry of National Defense, said: "Everyone longs to be reunited with their loved ones during Tet. However, upholding the qualities of 'Uncle Ho's Soldiers,' continuing the heroic tradition of the 559th Truong Son Army Corps, and especially because the project's completion deadline is measured in days, the team had to work throughout Tet to fulfill their promise to the Party and State leaders, the investor, and society. To date, we have completed the pile drilling for piers T0, T1, and T2; proceeded with the concrete construction of the bridge girders; and focused on dismantling and clearing the remaining bridge section." Currently, the unit is mobilizing maximum manpower and resources, focusing on implementing a "3-shift, 4-team" construction schedule, working throughout the Tet holiday, striving to shorten the project completion time while ensuring the quality of the construction to quickly connect the transportation network in the area, creating the most favorable conditions for people to travel between the two banks of the river, connecting Tam Nong district with Lam Thao district, Phu Tho province with neighboring localities; contributing to promoting socio-economic development and ensuring national defense and security in the region.
Mr. Dinh Quang Tuan, a worker from Ninh Binh province, said: "As a key and urgent project, the thoughtful support and guidance from the local government and people have given us more motivation to complete our task. Every day, witnessing long lines of people and vehicles crossing the pontoon bridge, we understand the people's desire to have a new Phong Chau bridge soon. We always encourage each other to overcome all difficulties to complete the bridge as soon as possible and shorten the project completion time."
Meanwhile, Mr. Hoang Van Hanh, a crane operator, shared: "Having been involved in the road and bridge construction industry for over a decade, celebrating Tet (Lunar New Year) at the construction site has become familiar. My family has gradually come to understand my profession. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, requiring the contractor to work continuously in three shifts a day, so there are no days off, holidays, or Tet celebrations. Although we can't enjoy a family reunion during Tet like many others, the officers, soldiers, engineers, and workers who are staying at the construction site still have small joys. We also organize making banh chung (traditional Vietnamese rice cakes), buy fruits to offer to our ancestors, and celebrate Tet together right at the construction site. Although we don't have family by our side, we have our comrades and the local authorities, so celebrating Tet together at the construction site is very heartwarming," Mr. Hanh confided.
The joint venture of Toan Thinh Company and Truong Thinh Company is concentrating machinery to construct the road connecting Hung Vuong Street through Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, Phu Dong Street to Au Co Street.
Speed up to make up for lost time.
In Viet Tri city, taking advantage of the favorable weather in the days leading up to Tet, the construction site for the road connecting Hung Vuong Street through Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, Phu Dong Street to Au Co Street remains bustling with the sound of machinery.
Speaking with a reporter from Phu Tho Newspaper, Mr. Bui Tan Nghia, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Viet Tri City, said: The project connecting Hung Vuong Street through Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, Phu Dong Street to Au Co Street has a length of 3.76km, a roadbed width of 27m (including a road surface width of 15.0m and sidewalk widths of 6.0m x 2 = 12.0m), designed according to the standards of a main street in the area, passing through 3 communes/wards of the city: Van Co, Van Phu and Phuong Lau, with a total investment of over 449.9 billion VND. After more than 2 years of construction, land clearance has been completed for 3.56/3.76km, and the contractor is currently working on the entire cleared area. The roadbed has been basically formed along the entire route; and the weak soil foundation is being treated in areas passing through low-lying fields and swamps. The embankment (k95) has been laid, the bridge extension across Nguyen Tat Thanh Street has been completed; and construction is underway on drainage systems along and across the road, as well as utility trenches. Along with accelerating road construction, we will continue to develop and finalize planning, especially land use planning and urban planning; review and adjust planning projects to ensure investment attraction and project implementation, contributing to the expansion of the city's urban space as stipulated.
Pile driving is being carried out to treat weak soil foundations during the construction of culverts across roads in the project connecting Hung Vuong Street through Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, Phu Dong Street to Au Co Street.
Winning the bid for the section from Au Co dike to Nguyen Tat Thanh road, which is also the most challenging section of the route due to the predominantly low-lying, swampy terrain requiring significant time and effort to address the weak soil foundation, the joint venture of Truong Thinh Company and Toan Thinh Company, with a determination to exceed the schedule to celebrate the Party Congress at all levels, mobilized maximum resources, machinery, and manpower, surpassing the bid specifications.
Mr. Tran Minh, a technical officer at Truong Thinh Company, said: "As a key project of the city, we have received maximum attention and support from all levels of government through which the project passes. However, the biggest difficulty is that the construction area is mostly ponds, swamps, and low-lying rice paddies with alternating fish and rice cultivation, making the treatment of weak soil very time-consuming. Especially, this area is also the lowest-lying region of the city; whenever it rains, water from everywhere floods the construction site, causing at least 3-4 months of work to be interrupted due to unfavorable weather conditions each year. However, the most difficult part, land clearance and weak soil treatment, has now been completed. The city has created all the necessary conditions regarding the site to facilitate construction, so we need to take advantage of these advantages to accelerate progress and compensate for delays caused by bad weather. Before the Lunar New Year holiday, the company strives to complete the culvert section." The roadbed and foundation work is expected to reach approximately 70% completion. In addition, the company is laying gravel at the beginning of the route to ensure traffic safety for people traveling during the Tet holiday.
As one of the fastest-progressing contracts, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Truong, in charge of construction organization for Hoan Nguyen Company's electrical system, sidewalk, and paving project, in a joint venture with Truong Thinh Company and Toan Thinh Company, said that the unit is currently focusing its workforce on accelerating progress before the Tet holiday. The company regularly encourages its employees to overcome difficulties, strive to complete their assigned tasks well, celebrate Tet with their families, and return to the construction site early in the new year.
Clarifying the project's progress, Mr. Dang Manh Hung, a project management officer from the Viet Tri City Infrastructure Investment Project Management Board, stated: Recognizing this as a key transportation project with immense significance in connecting trade and promoting socio-economic development, the Project Management Board has prioritized ensuring progress and quality from the outset, focusing resources and closely monitoring operations. Currently, the contractors are concentrating manpower to accelerate progress and ensure completion of all tasks before allowing workers to return home for Tet (Lunar New Year). Specifically, the section from Au Co dike to Phu Dong road and the section from Bo Luong dam to Nguyen Tat Thanh road (1.6km long) have completed the K95 roadbed and are currently laying the road surface and completing the drainage system. The section from Bo Luong dam to Nhoi bridge is undergoing weak soil treatment. The section from Nguyen Tat Thanh Street to Hung Vuong Street is 600m long. The unit is focusing on completing the excavation and embankment of the 400m section that has already been cleared before the Lunar New Year. Regarding the intersection with Hung Vuong Street, there are still 200m that have not been cleared. The project management board is focusing on completing the infrastructure of the resettlement area so that land can be handed over to the households needing relocation after the Lunar New Year to implement the project. We will decisively direct the contractor and coordinate closely and regularly with the local authorities to immediately resolve any land clearance issues, as well as remove any arising procedural obstacles, and concentrate machinery and personnel to accelerate construction progress. In particular, the project must be constructed to the highest quality, striving to complete it by May 2025, putting the entire project into use to celebrate the 135th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh and the City Party Congress, finishing 7 months ahead of the contract schedule.
Along with the Phong Chau Bridge project, the road connecting Hung Vuong Street through Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, Phu Dong Street to Au Co Street (Viet Tri City)..., hundreds of large and small construction projects are gradually taking shape throughout the province, demonstrating the Party and State's concern for the local development. A new spring has arrived, bringing with it hopes and aspirations. The joyful atmosphere of competitive labor and production on construction sites is accelerating. This is truly a positive sign contributing to new advancements for Phu Tho in the new year 2025, creating momentum for the comprehensive socio-economic development of the province.
