Vietnam is the third largest mango supplier to Korea. Mango exports: How to increase market share? |
Vietnamese mangoes are present in 40 countries.
Vietnam has become the 13th largest mango exporting country in the world . Vietnamese mangoes have been exported to 40 countries, of which the main market is China, accounting for nearly 84.6%; followed by Russia, the United States, Korea, the EU, Australia, Japan, etc. However, Vietnam's mango export turnover only accounts for more than 1% of the world's total mango export.
Vietnam's mango exports account for only over 1% of the world's total mango exports. |
With the development of the global economy , finding export markets for Vietnamese agricultural products in general and mangoes in particular as well as strengthening trade relations with international partners is extremely necessary. In addition, it is necessary to comply with the regulations on plant quarantine of export markets.
Mr. Luong Ngoc Quang - Department of International Cooperation and Communications (Plant Protection Department - Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ) - said: For mangoes exported to WTO countries, it is necessary to comply with the plant quarantine regulations of the Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS Agreement) and the International Plant Protection Convention - IPPC.
The basic requirement for fresh fruit is to have a phytosanitary certificate issued by a competent authority and the shipment must not be contaminated with plant quarantine objects. Some import markets only need to meet the above basic requirements, including: Middle Eastern countries, Eastern European countries, ASEAN countries and Canada.
According to Mr. Luong Ngoc Quang, in order to meet the regulations set by importers, first of all, the growing gardens or packing facilities need to register the growing area code or packing facility code. The registration of growing area code or packing facility code is on a voluntary basis, from which the Plant Protection Department will inspect and evaluate, which is the basis for granting codes or maintaining and restoring codes and must be recognized by the importing country.
“The first requirement when exporting mangoes is traceability. In the Mekong Delta alone, there are currently nearly 300 growing area codes issued for export,” Mr. Luong Ngoc Quang shared.
Regarding the Chinese market, Ms. Luong Thi Hai Yen - Plant Protection Department - said that currently, Chinese importers have set very high requirements for food safety conditions, enterprises must have a food safety management system equivalent to HACCP standards. This requirement is difficult for small and medium enterprises to meet immediately.
Meet strict requirements from import markets
In the world's most demanding market segment, Mr. Tran Van Cong - Vietnam's Agricultural Counselor in Europe - shared that the EU market has great potential. In 2022, they spent 35 billion USD to import fruits, including 500,000 - 600,000 tons of mangoes. However, the EU's main import markets are Africa and South America. Mangoes from Vietnam in particular and Asia in general account for a very small proportion.
Despite the tax advantage, however, Vietnamese mangoes have not been able to penetrate deeply into their mass market due to the long distance (long transportation time, high cost), and short preservation time. Air freight costs are very high, so the ability to transport large quantities is very difficult.
In addition, in terms of quarantine, Europe has very strict food safety criteria and pesticide residue thresholds. In addition, this market also has requirements for safety certification, environmental and social standards that are very different from before.
Vietnamese mangoes have great potential in the EU market, with the Netherlands being the largest importer. Mr. Tran Van Cong recommends that businesses should prioritize the development of high-end mangoes to serve the Asian community in Europe. At the same time, it is necessary to focus on promoting Vietnamese mangoes. I have not seen any information about Vietnamese mangoes in the European market.
In 2015, Japan allowed the import of fresh mangoes from Vietnam. After many years of export, many Japanese consumers have now known about Vietnam's Cat Chu mango. This is a fragrant mango with a skin that changes from green to yellow, shaped like a teardrop and has a high sugar content, which is popular with Japanese people.
However, the market share of Vietnamese mangoes in the Japanese market remains modest. Vietnamese mangoes exported to the Japanese market cost 370 yen/kg (over 600,000 VND/kg), only half that of Thai mangoes at 765 yen/kg.
Mr. Ta Duc Minh - Commercial Counselor of the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan - commented that Vietnam has many opportunities to boost fresh mango exports to Japan as this market only accepts the import of Cat Chu mango varieties and can expand its market share if Vietnam can negotiate to expand the export of other mango varieties in the future. In particular, the E2R2 mango - Australian mango variety is very suitable for the tastes and consumption habits of Japanese consumers.
Giving recommendations to export enterprises, Mr. Ta Duc Minh said that Japanese importers always want stability in prices and supply from Vietnamese export partners. This is also a market that requires high standards for product quality and food hygiene and safety.
Therefore, businesses need to carry out synchronous linkages from the stages of cultivation, processing, preservation, transportation and export to strictly control quality and food safety standards, traceability, ensure that fruits are fresh and delicious, maintain quality, brand and maintain the market.
