TPO - At midday, when the temperature is at its highest, is the time to apply oil paint to the baskets and containers. The oiling must be done in the sun so that the oil spreads and penetrates evenly.

At noon, the Tam Quang fishing port (Tam Quang commune, Nui Thanh district, Quang Nam province) was scorching hot and deserted. A group of people were still hunched over amidst a long row of overturned fishing baskets on the shore. These squid fishing baskets were being freshly coated with resin oil after their return from the sea.

After each fishing trip, the fishing boats are brought ashore for inspection and repainting with a waterproof coating. Some fishermen do this themselves, while others hire people. A team specializing in applying this waterproof coating to fishing boats has also been formed.

The job requires meticulousness and endurance because it involves working under the scorching sun for many hours.

Each basket coated with oil is paid 150,000 VND. It takes nearly two hours to complete the oil coating process on each basket, meaning the worker has to work under the constant sun for that amount of time.

Ms. Pham Thi Le (62 years old, residing in Tam Quang commune) has been doing this job for decades. She said that applying the oil requires a steady hand and good health because it's done in the hottest weather. Even though she's hired, she has to do it carefully and conscientiously because it directly affects the lives of the fishermen.

The fishing boats and their crews spend two months at sea. Therefore, upon returning to shore, they need to be inspected and re-oiled to ensure they are ready for the next fishing trip.
