| YouTube is testing a Premium package for couples. |
The YouTube Premium subscription package for couples, called Two-person Premium, promises to be ideal for couples, roommates, or small households.
According to YouTube, the new plan will allow couples to share a Premium account at a lower price than subscribing individually. This is similar to Spotify's Duo plan, aimed at users who want to enjoy the benefits of Premium, such as ad-free and background playback, without needing a family plan.
YouTube spokesperson Alex McQuiston confirmed to The Verge that the new subscription package will be rolled out first in markets such as India, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
McQuiston stated, "We're exploring new ways to provide greater flexibility and value for YouTube Premium subscribers, including offering a two-person option, allowing them to share a single subscription at a lower cost."
In India, the individual YouTube Premium plan costs 140 INR, while the couple plan costs 219 INR and the family plan costs 299 INR. This means the couple plan is in the middle, offering a lower cost for two users compared to the individual plan.
The Two-Person Premium plan, designed for two people, appeared shortly after YouTube launched its Premium Lite plan. This was a cheaper plan that allowed viewing most videos ad-free but lacked features like offline downloading or background playback. Additionally, content such as music and music videos still displayed ads.
YouTube announced that the total number of subscribers to YouTube Premium and YouTube Music (including those on trial) has surpassed 125 million globally.
