YouTube Tests Premium Package for Couples |
The YouTube Premium subscription plan for couples is called Two-person Premium, and it promises to be ideal for couples, roommates, or small households.
YouTube says the new plan will allow couples to share a Premium account for less than they would pay individually. This is similar to Spotify's Duo plan, which is aimed at users who want Premium benefits like no ads and background playback, but don't need a family plan.
YouTube spokesperson Alex McQuiston confirmed to The Verge that the new subscription plan will roll out first in markets like India, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
“We’re testing new ways to provide greater flexibility and value to YouTube Premium subscribers, including offering a dual-user option that allows them to share a single subscription for a lower cost,” McQuiston said.
In India, the individual YouTube Premium plan costs INR 140, while the couple plan costs INR 219 and the family plan costs INR 299. That means the couple plan falls in the middle, offering a lower cost for two users compared to the individual plan.
The Two-person Premium plan for two people comes shortly after YouTube launched its Premium Lite plan, a low-cost plan that allows for ad-free viewing of most videos but lacks features like offline downloads or background playback. Additionally, content like music and music videos still feature ads.
YouTube said the total number of YouTube Premium and YouTube Music subscribers (including trials) has surpassed 125 million globally.
