Here are the oldest ancient forests on Earth with unique beauty.

Takayna/Tarkine Forest (Australia)

Tasmania's Takayna/Tarkine temperate rainforest recreates what Earth looked like 300 million years ago. It is home to the second oldest living tree on the planet, the Huon pine, which is up to 3,000 years old.

Araucaria Forest (Chile)

The Araucaria tree, also known as Pehuén in the indigenous Mapuche language or “monkey puzzle tree,” is about 1,000 years old and grows in many parts of the Chilean Andes. Visit Chile’s Araucanía region in November to witness “coning season,” when the tree produces pineapple-shaped seeds that are used in local cuisine by the indigenous Penuenche and Mapuche people.

Yakushima Forest (Japan)

The Yakusugi trees, also known as Japanese cedars (sugi in Japanese), have existed in the forests of Yakushima Island for about 7,000 years. The rainforest was so prized by 17th-century Japanese royalty that scenes from the forest were recreated in a garden on the mainland. In 1993, the Yakushima Forest was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is also the inspiration for famous anime works such as Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away.

Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest (California)

The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, located 10,000 feet above sea level in the California highlands of the Inyo National Forest, is home to some of the oldest trees on Earth. Among them is the Methuselah tree, which has an unusual twisting shape and is estimated to be over 4,840 years old.

Amazon Rainforest (Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia)

This ancient rainforest in northern Australia is estimated to be up to 180 million years old. It is the largest rainforest in Australia, covering around 1,200 square kilometres. It is also recognised as part of the World Heritage Site – Tropical Queensland, one of the most important ecosystems on the planet.

Białowieża Forest (Poland and Belarus)

The Białowieża Forest is one of Europe's oldest surviving forests. In the Middle Ages, it was a hunting ground for kings and tsars. In the early 20th century, Poland and Belarus declared the Białowieża Forest – which straddles the border between both countries – a national park, and it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

Waipoua Forest (New Zealand)

The oldest tree in Waipoua Forest (New Zealand) is called Tāne Mahuta (Lord of the Forest), estimated to be between 1,250 and 2,500 years old and measuring up to 46m tall. This conifer is one of many in Waipoua Forest that were nearly wiped out when European settlers arrived in the 19th century and began cutting down trees for timber.

Fortunately, the forest was designated a reserve in 1952 and has remained largely undamaged since.

Avenue of the Baobabs (Madagascar)

Hundreds of years ago, the Avenue of the Baobabs was located in a dense rainforest of Adansonia grandidieri trees, a tree species unique to Madagascar. After years of deforestation, only about 20 of the trees—commonly known as baobabs—still stand along the famous dirt road. With their unique shape and “upside down” posture, these giant trees are especially striking at sunrise and sunset.

Tongass National Forest (Alaska)

This temperate rainforest in Alaska is the largest national forest in the United States. At 16.7 million acres, the Tongass National Forest occupies a vast swath of southeastern Alaska and is home to some of the best-preserved ancient trees in North America – many estimated to be over 800 years old.
