10 years of the Econometrics and Applied Economics Olympiad: Continuing to be a 'field of knowledge'

On June 7, the Academy of Finance held the 10th Anniversary Ceremony of the National Student Science Competition in Econometrics and Applications and the opening ceremony of the 10th Final Round of the Competition in 2025.

The National Student Science Competition in Econometrics and Applications is co-organized by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Student Association, the Academy of Finance and the Institute of Mathematics. Since its first organization in 2015, over the past 10 years, the Competition has continuously developed, becoming one of the prestigious academic playgrounds for students who are passionate about scientific research in general, and exploring the application of mathematical models, econometrics, and data science in research in particular. From practical application topics to creative models, the Competition has been and is a place where young minds, innovative spirit and aspiration to contribute to society crystallize.

Speaking at the ceremony, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dao Tung, Director of the Academy of Finance, emphasized that the opening ceremony of the 10th National Student Science Olympiad in Econometrics and Applications in 2025 is not only a proud milestone in the 10-year development journey of the Competition - a journey of perseverance and aspiration, of intelligence and effort, but also has special significance in the context of Vietnam entering an era of advancement in science and technology.

The Director of the Academy of Finance affirmed: "We celebrate 10 years and open a new journey together, with greater aspirations, further vision, and a deeper spirit of dedication - a journey to spread scientific values, fueling the passion for scientific research of Vietnamese students". The Organizing Committee is committed to raising the level of the Competition, continuing to be a "field of knowledge", a journey to nurture global citizens, making a practical contribution to the cause of national development.

In the era of advancing in science and technology when Vietnam strives to become a developed country with high income by 2045, "students are the core force. This year's competition is not only an academic competition but also a "laboratory" for breakthrough ideas, where knowledge meets technology, theory combines practice", Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dao Tung shared.

In particular, the Academy of Finance is proud to be a pioneer, accompanying and connecting universities to contribute to training a generation of students with research capacity, digital skills, and global vision - the seeds of high-quality human resources of the country in the era of national development.

At the seminar "10-year Imprint of the National Econometrics Olympiad and Application", Dr. Vo Tri Thanh, economic expert, Director of the Institute for Brand and Competitiveness Strategy Research, Head of the Jury, said that over the past 10 years, the competition has increasingly attracted the participation of students nationwide, the quality of research topics has been improved, with high applicability, further affirming the brand and reputation of the competition. The scientific research topics from students are not only the product of logical thinking, of serious research methods, but also the creativity and inspiration for the judges themselves - long-time scientists.

According to the Head of the Jury, the Competition has helped many students reach out to the world , becoming researchers, data experts, and economists at prestigious global academic centers.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Thi Ha Duong - Director of the International Mathematics Research and Training Center highly appreciated the Competition, a playground in line with the sustainable development spirit of UNESCO. Through the competition seasons, students have affirmed their confidence and convincing presentation skills. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Thi Ha Duong believes that the competition will develop further, attracting international students to participate. In particular, when learning that the Academy of Finance plans to open a major in Economic Mathematics. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Thi Ha Duong said that this is the right direction because many models in economics are closely linked to mathematical models, not only at the macro level but also in important micro issues of life.

MSc. To Cong Nguyen Bao - Lecturer of the Faculty of Finance, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City shared: He himself has grown up from the Contest and with his efforts, it is a solid foundation for him to study, research and grow up and become a lecturer, continuing to guide students participating in this Contest. According to him, success is not simply participating in the contest and winning prizes, but then also nurturing the passion for scientific research, experience, accumulating knowledge, opening up many opportunities in the future, many students participating in the contest have had the opportunity to win scholarships to study abroad or find many job opportunities after graduation.

As a contestant who won first prize at the 2021 National Econometrics and Applied Economics Olympiad, Virginia Tech graduate student Huynh Tan Vu shared via Zoom that participating in the competition was a major turning point for him, helping him love discovery and passion for scientific research. The knowledge he learned about mathematics and econometrics in Vietnam has created a foundation for good access to knowledge and study programs in the US.

At the ceremony, in order to recognize and encourage the dedication and contributions of scientists, lecturers and students with outstanding achievements in the competition over the past 10 years, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Student Association - one of the co-organizers of the competition - awarded the "For the Young Generation" Medal, the "Creative Youth" Badge and honored many individuals with outstanding achievements.

In addition to professional achievements, the Organizing Committee especially appreciates and recognizes students who not only achieved good results, but also demonstrated a spirit of progress and overcoming difficulties to excel in their studies and research in this year's Competition.

Over the past 10 years, the National Student Science Competition in Econometrics and Applications has had 197 schools participating, 1091 research topics of more than 3000 students participating, including 4 topics of Vietnamese students studying abroad. There have been 4 special prizes, 47 first prizes, 113 second prizes, 215 third prizes, 487 consolation prizes awarded with a total prize of up to 950 million VND. In addition, the Competition also awarded scholarships to students in difficult circumstances, ethnic minority students who won high prizes in the Competition. The scale of the Competition has grown day by day, from the early days with 5 schools and a few dozen topics to now, in 2025, there have been 344 research works from 26 universities and academies.

Many topics are highly practical, modern research methods integrate AI, big data analysis, and are applied to a variety of research topics in digital economy, green finance, climate change, natural disasters, regional and international geopolitical issues... The contest shows the responsibility of Vietnamese students in the face of global current issues, and is a symbol of the readiness to shine of young Vietnamese minds when participating in scientific playgrounds domestically as well as internationally.

After the opening ceremony of the final round of the 10th National Student Science Olympiad in Econometrics and Applications 2025, the contestants will enter the competition today, June 8 at the Academy of Finance.
