Over the past 10 years, university admissions have undergone many innovations to facilitate candidates.

College admissions have changed a lot in the past 10 years.

Since 2015, the Ministry of Education and Training has organized the national high school exam with two purposes: to consider high school graduation and to serve as a basis for university admissions. Candidates must take at least 4 exams to be considered for graduation recognition, including 3 compulsory subjects: Math, Literature, Foreign Language and one elective subject from the remaining subjects. In addition, students can take additional subjects to expand their university combination.

Candidates can register for up to 4 wishes at a school, the registration period is around August. Candidates do not need to choose a school before taking the exam. After the results are out, based on the achieved scores, they must submit their application to the school they want within the prescribed time. This has created a controversial race to submit and withdraw applications at the "89th minute".

Also in this year, Hanoi National University was the first educational institution in the country to organize a competency assessment exam to obtain admission results.

In 2017, the exam continued to change. Candidates must take three compulsory tests: Math, Literature, Foreign Language and one optional test: Natural Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) or Social Science (History, Geography, Civic Education).

This is also the year that candidates can register for an unlimited number of admission wishes and schools, and must arrange their wishes in order of priority from highest to lowest.

In 2018, the Ministry of Education and Training no longer regulates the floor score as before. Schools determine their own floor score threshold. Also in this year, regional priority points are reduced by 50%. Specifically, Region 1 priority points are reduced from 1.5 to 0.75 points; Region 2 rural areas are reduced from 1 point to 0.5 points and Region 2 is reduced from 0.5 to 0.25 points.

2019 is the year that universities are assigned to preside over the grading of multiple-choice tests. Along with that, the revised Law on Higher Education comes into effect, allowing schools to be autonomous in recruiting students. Higher education institutions have begun to use many methods for admission.

In 2020, the National High School Exam was changed to a High School Graduation Exam, focusing on the main goal of high school graduation to assess the quality of high school students nationwide.

In 2022, candidates applying for admission by any method, including early admission, must register their wishes online on the Ministry's common system. Schools are not allowed to ask candidates to confirm early admission.

Candidates enjoy regional priority policies according to regulations in the year of graduating from high school (or college) and the following year.

In 2023, the priority points for candidates with a total score of 22.5 or higher will gradually decrease, with the maximum admission score (including priority) being 30 points.

2025 is the year of the first batch of candidates graduating from the new general education program. Candidates will take the high school graduation exam with 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects: Math, Literature and 2 elective subjects from the remaining subjects studied in grade 12. The university admission regulations have been amended to tighten early admission, with an expected 20% of the quota remaining.

After 10 years of innovation in university entrance exams, from only having one admission option of using the results of the 3 common exams (common exam session, common questions and common results), up to now, there have been at least 20 methods used by schools.

The autonomy of universities is increasingly expanded. In addition, the changes are assessed to create favorable conditions and add more benefits to candidates.
