The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), based in New York, USA, publishes its annual Global Peace Index study, ranking the safest and most dangerous places in the world for 2023.

Iceland is the safest country. This ranking was completed before November 21st, when Iceland was in a state of emergency due to a volcanic eruption that forced 3,400 people in the town of Grindavik to evacuate. Singapore (6) and Japan (9) are two representatives from Asia in the top 10 safest destinations in the world. In 2022, Japan ranked 10th, Singapore 9th. Vietnam ranked 41st, up 3 places compared to 2022. The remaining names include: Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia and Switzerland.

Afghanistan (163rd) is considered the least peaceful country in the world for the 8th consecutive year, followed by Yemen (162), Syria (161), South Sudan (160) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (159). The remaining 5 destinations are: Russia, Ukraine, Somalia, Sudan and Iraq.

The IEP points out that the war in Ukraine "has a significant impact on global peace," causing Ukraine and Russia to drop several places in the rankings. Additionally, the study also assesses Haiti, Mali, and Israel as other countries with the greatest levels of decline.

The safety level of countries is ranked based on 23 categories such as population, safety, social security, domestic and international conflict, and level of militarization . Each category is scored on a scale of 1-5. The lower the overall score of a country or destination, the higher its safety ranking.
