Here are 12 notable rumored features of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max (updated to May 2025):
1. Aluminum frame
The iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max are said to use an aluminum frame, instead of a titanium frame like the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro, or a stainless steel frame like the iPhone X to iPhone 14 Pro.
The back will feature a combination of aluminum and glass, bringing a new and lighter look to Apple's 2025 flagships.
2. Rectangular camera cluster
The iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max are expected to feature a large rectangular camera cluster with rounded corners. However, Apple will still keep the familiar triangular 3-lens layout on the back.
This year, for the first time, the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max will have three 48MP lenses: a 48MP Fusion main lens, a 48MP Ultra Wide lens, and a new 48MP Telephoto lens using Tetraprism technology.
3. Sky Blue color option
Similar to the colors on the latest MacBook Air, the iPhone 17 Pro will have an additional luxurious and outstanding Sky Blue color version.
Sources close to the supply chain have confirmed that some iPhone 17 Pro prototypes have been produced in various color versions, including Sky Blue, which is considered to be more beautiful than the Sierra Blue color that was very popular on the iPhone 13 Pro.
4. Bigger battery
The iPhone 17 Pro Max will have a slightly thicker design (8.725mm instead of 8.25mm like the iPhone 16 Pro Max) to accommodate a larger battery, extending usage time, which many users expect.
5. A19 Pro Chip
The iPhone 17 Pro will be powered by the A19 Pro chip – Apple's latest generation of processors, based on TSMC's third-generation 3nm process.
With the A19 Pro chip, performance is expected to increase slightly and be more energy efficient than current models. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 models will use the A19 chip, which can be manufactured on TSMC's N3P (upgraded 3nm) process.
6. Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip
All four iPhone 17 models will be equipped with Apple's own Wi-Fi 7 chip, instead of using Broadcom's chip as before. The connection will be faster, more stable and consume less power.
7. 24MP front camera
The front-facing selfie camera on all iPhone 17 models will be upgraded to 24MP, double the 12MP on the iPhone 16.
With an upgraded 6-element lens compared to the 12MP camera with 5 elements in previous generations, the front camera on the iPhone 17 promises to bring sharper and more detailed photos, even when cropping or zooming.
8. 48MP telephoto camera on the back
The rear telephoto camera cluster on the 17 Pro line will also be upgraded to 48MP, instead of 12MP like on the iPhone 16 Pro.
The zoom will be 3.5x (85mm focal length), instead of 5x as it is now, allowing for better portraits and everyday photos. The high resolution will support digital cropping without losing much quality.
9. Dual video recording (dual video recording)
According to source Jon Prosser (YouTube channel Front Page Tech), iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max will allow users to record videos simultaneously with both front and rear cameras in the default Camera app.
10. 8K video recording
Apple is said to have tested 8K video recording on the iPhone 16 Pro but has yet to release the feature.
With the entire rear camera system reaching 48MP, it is very likely that 8K recording will officially appear on the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. This is a big step forward for the iPhone, competing with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and Pixel 9 Pro models.
11. 12GB RAM
The iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and even the iPhone 17 Air model are said to feature 12GB of RAM, up from 8GB of RAM on the iPhone 16 Pro.
This should result in better performance, especially when using Apple Intelligence (AI)-related features and multitasking.
12. Upgraded cooling system
All four iPhone 17 models are rumored to feature a new internal design that helps dissipate heat more efficiently. The Pro line in particular could feature a vapor chamber cooling system – a technology already found on many Android flagships. This solution helps dissipate heat efficiently, maintaining stable performance, especially on thin devices.
The iPhone 17 series will be launched next September. The 2025 iPhone models are expected to include: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air. The most powerful upgrades are usually only available on the Pro models.
