Statistics from the Vietnam National Tourism Administration show that during the four-day National Day holiday on September 2nd this year (from September 1st to 4th), approximately 2.5 million tourists traveled, a decrease of nearly 17% compared to the same period in 2022. The average occupancy rate at accommodation establishments reached 55%, with occupancy exceeding 60% on September 1st and 2nd.
Basically, there were no serious incidents or problems affecting tourism activities nationwide. Instances of price gouging, overcharging, or scams targeting tourists did not occur.
However, the National Tourism Administration assesses that some localities have not attracted as many tourists as expected due to the trend this year, where many tourists chose to travel nearby and independently within their place of residence ( staycation, drivecation ), cutting back on travel and tourism costs.
In addition, this year's September 2nd holiday coincides with the Vu Lan Festival (the 15th day of the 7th lunar month) and the start of the school year. Furthermore, domestic tourists have just completed their summer vacation, so many are choosing to return to their hometowns and reunite with their families during the holiday.
As a result, Ho Chi Minh City is estimated to have welcomed and served 960,000 visitors, an increase of 4.3% compared to the same period in 2022. The average room occupancy rate is estimated at approximately 80%, and total revenue from tourism is estimated at VND 2,890 billion, an increase of 5.5% compared to the same period last year. However, compared to the April 30th - May 1st holiday, the number of visitors increased slightly (950,000), room occupancy was 10% higher, but revenue was lower, reaching only 93%.
Hanoi is estimated to welcome and serve 640,000 tourists, a 51% increase compared to the same period in 2022. Total revenue from tourism is estimated at over 2 trillion VND, a 54% increase compared to the same period. However, this figure is still lower than the 720,000 tourists and 2.4 trillion VND in revenue generated during the April 30th holiday.
With 503,154 visitors, Khanh Hoa's tourist numbers increased by 141% compared to the same period last year. The average occupancy rate of accommodation establishments reached nearly 69%, and total revenue from tourism was estimated at over 662 billion VND (an increase of 115% compared to the same period last year). This number of visitors was nearly half the number during the April 30th holiday.
Ba Ria - Vung Tau welcomed and served 502,865 visitors, an increase of over 28% compared to the same period in 2022. The average room occupancy rate reached 80-85%, and total revenue from tourism is estimated at nearly 276 billion VND.
During the 4-day holiday, Thanh Hoa received 328,000 visitors (a 26.6% increase compared to the same period in 2022), with hotel occupancy exceeding 29%. Total revenue from tourism is estimated at 663 billion VND, a 30% increase compared to the same period. Compared to the April 30th holiday, both the number of visitors and revenue decreased significantly, by 26.6% and 24% respectively (with 1.2 million visitors and 2,800 billion VND in revenue).
Quang Ninh province is expected to welcome and serve 318,000 tourists, reaching 150% compared to the same period in 2022. The average occupancy rate of 4-5 star hotels reached 80-100%. Total revenue from tourism is estimated at 665 billion VND, reaching 134% compared to the same period in 2022.
With approximately 254,000 visitors (a 6.3% increase compared to the same period last year), hotel occupancy in Da Nang City reached 50-55% (4-5 star hotels reached 60-65%). Total revenue from tourism is estimated at nearly 915 billion VND.
Kien Giang welcomed and served 126,690 visitors, a decrease of 32.9% compared to the same period last year. Occupancy rates averaged only 27%, and total revenue from tourism was estimated at over 153 billion VND.
According to the National Tourism Administration, total tourism revenue decreased due to the trend of tourists tightening their spending this year, low purchasing power, reduced costs for public transportation (airplanes, trains) while transportation service prices increased during peak days.
Furthermore, due to the complex weather situation, with warnings of heavy rain during the holiday and the impact of Typhoon No. 3 (Saola) in the Southern region and the Mekong Delta, ferry services to island tourist destinations had to be suspended, affecting tourism activities, leading to tour cancellations and itinerary changes.
Furthermore, the number of domestic tourists staying within the country has decreased because a segment of tourists have chosen to travel abroad.
Specifically, during this year's September 2nd holiday, outbound tours are sharing market share with domestic tourists. The number of tours departing and destinations is very diverse and constantly evolving, especially in Northeast Asian routes such as China, Taiwan (China), South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong (China)... or Southeast Asian routes such as Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia,... As for routes to Europe and America, the number of tourists continues to increase by about 10-15% compared to the summer.
According to Mr. Tran Quoc Bao, Deputy General Director of Saigontourist Travel Company, in the third quarter of 2023 (including the September 2nd holiday), the company served 48 MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tour groups traveling abroad with a total of over 4,800 customers. In the coming period, the company plans to serve 143 groups, totaling 21,755 customers, traveling to South Korea, Hong Kong - Shenzhen (China), Taiwan (China), Thailand, Malaysia, and other destinations.
Notably, the number of international tourists visiting key tourist destinations has increased, which is a positive sign for Vietnam's inbound tourism season from October onwards.
Specifically, Da Nang is estimated to welcome 78,900 international visitors; Hanoi over 41,700 (an 83.6% increase compared to the same period); Ho Chi Minh City 37,600 (a 15% increase compared to the same period); Khanh Hoa 23,450 (a 363.34% increase compared to the same period);... The majority of visitors come from South Korea, China, Europe, and America, with an average stay of 4-5 nights.
