In recent years, Son Tung M-TP has consistently demonstrated his ambition to bring his music closer to the international market with songs featuring entirely English lyrics.

There's no one at all

In 2022, Son Tung M-TP released his first song entirely in English titled "There's no one at all." This is considered a major turning point in the singer's musical direction, as the song blends hip hop and rock styles.

The song quickly garnered attention but also sparked a major debate. Besides the controversial and subsequently removed music video content, Sơn Tùng's English pronunciation also became a topic of discussion on social media. Many viewers felt that the singer had a unique, emotionally rich way of enunciating words, but that the lyrics were difficult to understand when singing in English.

Nevertheless, the product still showed Son Tung M-TP's ambition to internationalize his music, something few V-pop artists pursued at that time. The music video "There's no one at all" attracted 25 million views.

Making my way

In 2023, Son Tung M-TP made a comeback with "Making My Way "—his second English-language song. The song features a modern electro-pop and R&B blend, conveying a positive message about moving forward, leaving behind past worries, and looking towards the future.

Upon its release, "Making My Way" quickly created a strong impact on digital music platforms. The song rose to number 1 on iTunes Vietnam and Apple Music Vietnam in a short time. Not stopping at the domestic market, the song also topped the iTunes charts in Singapore, Japan, and Taiwan, and reached high positions in many countries such as Germany, the United States, and Canada.

On YouTube, the visualizer version of "Making My Way" took less than 7 hours to reach the top of the trending and most popular music charts in Vietnam. Currently, the song has garnered over 54 million views on the platform.

However, similar to many of his previous English-language releases, "Making My Way" also sparked controversy. Some viewers felt that Sơn Tùng M-TP's English pronunciation wasn't entirely natural, particularly his enunciation and the way he pronounced words and omitted final sounds. On social media at the time, many admitted they needed to read the lyrics or subtitles to fully understand the song.

Nevertheless, many viewers still consider "Making My Way" a notable step forward for Son Tung M-TP in his pursuit of an international musical style.

Come my way

On the evening of May 28th, Son Tung M-TP returned to the music scene with the MV "Come My Way ," a collaboration with Vietnamese-American rapper Tyga. Upon its release, the video attracted nearly 600,000 simultaneous viewers, making the 1994-born singer the center of attention.

According to the team, the music video reached 1 million views just 8 minutes after its release, further demonstrating the strong appeal of Son Tung M-TP. After the first 24 hours of its release, "Come My Way" topped the trending lists in many countries such as Vietnam, the US, Japan, Australia, and Germany, and also ranked at the top on several digital music platforms, including iTunes Vietnam.

"Come My Way" boasts a heavily invested visual lineup and a fresh musical sound. The song blends afrobeats, hip-hop, and contemporary pop, co-written by Son Tung M-TP and producer Marvey Muzique. Notably, the singer performs entirely in English for this comeback, while Tyga handles the rap part.

Viewers also praised the scale of the music video's production, with the crew filming in various locations in Trang An (Ninh Binh) and Downtown Los Angeles (USA). Director Phuong Vu skillfully incorporated elements of folk culture such as the Lac bird, Ly Dynasty dragon motifs, and the Bay Nui bull racing festival ( An Giang ) to create a unique visual effect.

However, alongside the positive reactions, some viewers felt that Son Tung M-TP's music wasn't truly groundbreaking. Many opinions suggested that the singer still had limitations in his English pronunciation. Rapper Thai VG also argued that Son Tung needed to improve his pronunciation to be more accurate and natural.
