Mastering the combination of high school graduation exams and university entrance exams will help students plan their subjects for grade 10, and at the same time, choose the "golden combination" to increase their chances of being admitted to university.
Immediately after being admitted to grade 10, students must choose a subject combination to follow throughout their 3 years of high school. This choice is not only a subject, but also a strategic decision, closely linked to university admissions and future career orientation.

The 2018 GeneralEducation Program (GEP) stipulates compulsory and elective subjects according to orientation. Of the 8 compulsory subjects, 4 are assessed by scores: mathematics, literature, foreign language and history.
Other compulsory subjects include: Physical education, national defense and security education, experiential activities - career guidance, local educational content.
In addition to the 8 compulsory subjects above, students must choose 4 out of 9 optional subjects including: physics, chemistry, biology, information technology, geography, economic and legal education, technology, fine arts and music.
In theory, students have hundreds of options, but in reality each high school usually has about 5-8 groups, mainly divided into 2 groups: natural and social sciences, depending on the number of teachers and facilities.
After 3 years of study, based on the current 2025 high school graduation exam regulations, students can imagine continuing to choose 4 subjects to take the high school graduation exam, of which math and literature are required.
In addition, candidates choose 2 subjects out of 9 subjects studied at school (chemistry, physics, biology, geography, history, economic and legal education, information technology, technology and foreign languages).
Three types of combinations to distinguish
- High school combination: Includes 4 out of 9 elective subjects (physics, chemistry, biology, informatics, geography, economic and legal education, technology, fine arts and music ).
Students will study this combination throughout high school. Changing combinations is only allowed at the end of each school year, which is almost synonymous with changing classes. Changing combinations is allowed in regulations, but in practice it will be difficult due to the established class structure.
- High school graduation exam combination: From 4 optional subjects, candidates choose 2 subjects for the high school graduation exam, called the optional subject combination, in addition to 2 compulsory subjects: math and literature.
- University admission combination: This combination usually consists of 3 subjects, used by universities for admission. Among them, some traditional combinations are often chosen such as: A00 (math, physics, chemistry), B00 (math, chemistry, biology), C00 (literature, history, geography), D01 (math, literature, English)...
In addition to considering high school graduation exam scores, university admission combinations can also be made up of graduation exam subjects, competency assessment exam scores, aptitude test scores, foreign language certificate conversion scores, high school transcript scores of subjects, etc.
With the regulation of taking 2 compulsory subjects: math, literature and 2 elective subjects, the high school graduation exam will have 36 ways to choose the subject combination. Specifically as follows:

From subjects and high school graduation exams, universities have built many corresponding admission combinations, expanding beyond traditional blocks such as A00, B00, C00, D01 to integrate new subjects.
In addition, schools can use: Competency assessment test scores, aptitude test scores, foreign language certificate conversion scores, etc.
According to statistics, there are about 200 university admission combinations. Below is a preliminary summary of university admission combinations for parents and students to refer to.

MSc. Truong Quang Tri, Deputy Head of Student Affairs Department, Nguyen Tat Thanh University, also affirmed that choosing high school subjects is not only for studying, but also to "pave the way" for university admission.
He explained that currently, universities still consider admission based on a combination of 3 or more subjects, which are mainly based on the subjects of math, literature, foreign languages, physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, and economic and legal education.
"If students do not study and take an exam in a certain subject in high school, it is almost impossible to participate in the admission exam according to the combination of that subject," Mr. Tri explained further.
Therefore, from grade 10, students need to orient their expected career early to choose the right combination.
For example, students who decide to pursue a medical career in the future need to consider block B00 (math, chemistry, biology). In addition to math, which is a compulsory subject in high school, they need to study chemistry and biology.
Parents and students should look up the university's official website, see what combinations that major considers, and note down 2–3 popular combinations to guide their studies.
