In yoga, intentional breathing is called Pranayama, derived from two Sanskrit words: "prana" (life force, the flow of vital energy in the body) and "yama" (control, regulation). Pranayama is not simply breathing; it's about learning to master the flow of inner energy, thereby positively impacting the entire body, including the skin.

  • 2. Moon energy activating breathing exercises (chandra bhedi pranayama)
  • 3. Cleansing breathing exercises (kapalabhati pranayama)
  • 4. Alternate-phase breathing exercises (anulom vilom)

Pranayama helps eliminate toxins, balance hormones, reduce cortisol (the stress hormone, one of the leading causes of acne, dull skin, and premature aging), and improve blood circulation to the skin. When the body and mind are truly relaxed, radiance will naturally emerge from within.

Here are four Pranayama breathing exercises you can practice daily to improve your skin from the inside out:

1. Solar energy activating breathing exercise (surya bhedi pranayama)

Benefits for the skin : This exercise activates the right meridian of the body, symbolizing solar energy, helping to increase internal heat, promote blood circulation, and brighten the skin from within. When blood circulation improves, nutrients and oxygen are transported to skin cells more efficiently, resulting in a rosy and supple complexion.

How to do it:

  • Sit in a comfortable position, with your back straight and your eyes slightly closed.
  • Use your left thumb to completely cover your left nostril.
  • Inhale slowly and deeply through your right nostril, feeling the airflow enter, activating the Pingala Nadi on the right side of your body.
  • Once you've inhaled fully, use your right thumb to close your right nostril while simultaneously opening your left nostril.
  • Exhale slowly and completely through your left nostril.
  • This is a continuous, repeating cycle, the longer the better...

Note: This exercise is designed to warm up the body, so it's more suitable to practice it in the morning than in the evening.

2. Moon energy activating breathing exercises (chandra bhedi pranayama)

Effects on the skin: While Surya bhedi activates hot energy, Chandra bhedi (chandra = moon, bhedi = to pass through) does the opposite, activating the left meridian which carries cool and calm energy. This exercise is particularly effective for people with hot skin, prone to acne due to heat or prolonged stress; it soothes the nervous system, reduces inflammation, and brings a deep sense of relaxation, thereby calming and reducing skin sensitivity.

How to do it:

  • Sit in the Padmasana (lotus) position or any comfortable sitting position.
  • Keep your back straight, close your eyes, and relax your whole body.
  • Use your right thumb to cover your right nostril.
  • Inhale slowly and deeply through your left nostril.
  • After inhaling deeply, use your finger to close your left nostril while simultaneously opening your right nostril.
  • Exhale completely through your right nostril.
  • Repeat several times at a steady rhythm...

Note: Chandra bhedi is suitable for practice in the evening or when the body feels hot, stressed, or after a long, tiring day.

3. Cleansing breathing exercises (kapalabhati pranayama)

Effects on the skin: Kapal means skull, bhati means radiant, the name itself describes the effect of the exercise. This is a breathing exercise focusing on strong, forceful exhalation, helping to expel all waste air and toxins from the lungs. When the lungs are thoroughly cleansed, the amount of oxygen in the blood increases, the skin receives more oxygen and becomes brighter and healthier. Kapalabhati is particularly effective in reducing acne, rashes, and skin problems related to internal toxin buildup.

How to do it:

  • Sit in the Sukhasana (cross-legged) position, with your back straight and your eyes gently closed.
  • Place both palms on your knees, palms facing up.
  • Breathe in normally and relax; this is the passive part.
  • Exhale quickly, forcefully, and decisively; this is the active part. When exhaling, contract your abdomen strongly; when inhaling, naturally arch your abdomen outward.
  • Focus entirely on exhaling, in a fast, even rhythm, like the sound of a pump.
  • Start with 20–30 repetitions, rest briefly, and repeat for 2–3 sets.
  • Practice every day to see noticeable results on your skin...

Note: Do not practice while pregnant, if you have high blood pressure, or immediately after eating; if you feel dizzy, stop and breathe normally.

4. Alternate-phase breathing exercises (anulom vilom)

Effects on the skin: This is the most comprehensive and extensively studied breathing exercise in Pranayama. Anulom vilom helps balance hormones, reduce oxidative damage in cells (one of the main causes of skin aging), open the mind, and release accumulated stress.

When hormones are balanced and stress is released, the skin improves noticeably: fewer breakouts, less dullness, a more even tone, and a more radiant complexion. This exercise is also helpful for people with diabetes in controlling blood sugar, and stable blood sugar is also a crucial factor for healthy skin.

How to do it:

  • Sit up straight and cross your legs comfortably.
  • Block your right nostril with your right thumb.
  • Inhale slowly and deeply through your left nostril for 5 seconds.
  • Close your left nostril and open your right nostril.
  • Exhale completely through your right nostril for 5 seconds.
  • Next, inhale through your right nostril for 5 seconds while simultaneously blocking your left nostril.
  • Block your right nostril and exhale through your left nostril for 5 seconds.
  • This is a complete cycle, practice 10–15 cycles per day...

Note: Anulom vilom is suitable for everyone, including beginners; it can be practiced in the early morning or in the evening before bed.

You don't need to dedicate hours each day; just 15-20 minutes in the morning, on an empty stomach, in a quiet space is enough to get started. With consistent practice for 4-6 weeks, you'll notice brighter, more even-toned skin, fewer blemishes, and an overall more radiant complexion, not thanks to any external products, but because your body is balancing and restoring itself from within.
