The announcement came after US manufacturers complained that companies in four Southeast Asian countries were flooding Washington's market with unreasonably cheap goods.
Specifically, the US Department of Commerce has issued a series of preliminary tariffs on solar panels from four countries, including Malaysia and Thailand.
The final decision is expected to be announced on April 18, 2025.
This is the second preliminary decision this year by the US Department of Commerce under President Joe Biden.
This is also the latest development in the more than decade-long US trade war with Chinese companies related to the Asian country's dominance of the solar panel industry.
Manufacturers in the country of one billion people have responded to US tariffs by moving large-scale production to countries that are not subject to tariffs - including Southeast Asian countries.
Previously, the alliance of American solar panel manufacturers said that large Chinese manufacturers with factories in Malaysia, Thailand... had dumped products on the market.
The coalition recommends anti-dumping duties ranging from 70.35% to 271.45% depending on the country to offset unfair pricing. The coalition also proposes duties to counter unfair subsidies in the above countries.
Most solar panels installed in the US are manufactured abroad, and about 80% of imports come from the four countries mentioned above, which are now the subject of an investigation by the US Department of Commerce.
