5G Advanded upgrades the speed of 5G, towards the 6G era
While the world has yet to fully tap into the potential of 5G, the next wave of technology has arrived: 5G Advanced - also known as 5.5G.
This is not only an upgrade of 5G, but also a pivotal stage in preparing for the sixth-generation mobile network (6G), where hundreds of billions of devices will be connected intelligently, in real time and with almost no latency.
The step between two mobile network eras
5G Advanced is developed under 3GPP Release 18, expected to begin commercialization in 2024-2025.
While current 5G focuses mainly on increasing network speed and stability, 5G-A expands the vision with many superior features: more bandwidth, lower latency, smarter networks, and global coverage, including in space.
Leading telecommunications corporations such as Huawei, Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm and Samsung have all announced their strategies for developing and testing 5.5G technology in 2023-2024. China is leading the way with many large-scale trials in Shenzhen, Beijing and Shanghai.
Connecting Hundreds of Billions of IoT Devices: From Dream to Reality
5G Advenced connects hundreds of billions of IoT devices
According to Tuoi Tre Online 's research, one of the outstanding goals of 5G-A is the ability to connect massive IoT - hundreds of billions of terminals, sensors and embedded systems globally.
This will help build an ecosystem where everything is connected: from smart watches, drones, autonomous vehicles to industrial robots, AI cameras, smart agriculture systems and city infrastructure.
Compared to 5G, 5G-A networks can increase device connection density by 10-100 times, from several million to tens of millions of devices per km². This is the core factor for implementing smart city models, smart factories and digital economies based on real-time data.
High speed - low latency - smarter network
According to tests announced by Huawei and China Mobile, 5G-A can achieve download speeds of 10 Gbps, 5-10 times faster than current commercial 5G networks. At the same time, latency can be reduced to just 0.5-1 ms - ideal conditions for deploying applications such as remote surgery, autonomous transportation, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and metaverse technology.
Another breakthrough is the ability to integrate AI directly into the network system - from the transmission infrastructure to the control layer. The network can self-learn, self-optimize, self-correct and allocate resources based on user behavior, service needs and actual conditions. This not only increases performance but also reduces energy consumption, moving towards a green - economical - sustainable network model.
One notable point is that 5G Advanced supports NTN - Non-Terrestrial Networks, allowing connection via satellites, balloons, UAVs, to expand coverage to remote areas, at sea, in the air - where traditional mobile networks cannot reach.
This is one of the fundamental steps to build a globalized 6G network, covering all geographical locations and spaces.
Towards 6G: From IoT Sensors to a Virtualized Digital World
Preparing for the 6G era
5G-A is not simply a technical upgrade, but also an infrastructure preparation for 'science fiction' technologies in the near future - where telecommunications networks can sense, process and control the physical world through digital space.
Trends like 3D hologram communication, distributed AI systems, nanoscale smart sensors, collaborative robots, and the Digital Twin will only truly take off with infrastructure like 5G Advanced or 6G.
In Vietnam, major carriers such as Viettel, VNPT and MobiFone have piloted 5G in major cities and are ready to enter the upgrade phase.
According to telecommunications experts, if Vietnam proactively invests in 5G-A from the early stages, we can not only catch up with global trends, but also open up opportunities to lead in the fields of Industry 4.0, logistics, healthcare, education and consumer technology.
5G Advanced is more than just a technical update. It is the bridge between today and tomorrow, between pure connectivity and intelligent ecosystems, between mobile networks and the world's "digital brain."
In an era where every industry is moving towards automation, real-time data and artificial intelligence, 5G-A is the foundation for creating a comprehensive digital future.
