On May 9, the People's Court of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province opened a first-instance trial and sentenced 6 defendants, who are players of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Football Club, for the crimes of "Gambling" and "Organizing gambling".
According to the verdict, the panel sentenced the defendants Le Bang Gia Huy (born 2002), Nguyen Son Hai (born 1994) and Pham Van Phong (born 2004) to 8 years in prison. Nguyen Quang Huy (born 2004) was sentenced to 7 years in prison, Nguyen Khanh Duy (born 2003) was sentenced to 4 years in prison. Tran Ky Anh (born 2004) was sentenced to 3 years in prison but was given a suspended sentence.
The indictment stated that on December 22, 2022, before the match between Ba Ria - Vung Tau Club and SHB Da Nang Club in the 2023-2024 First Division, players Gia Huy, Son Hai, Van Phong and Quang Huy met to discuss and agree to play below their ability to bet on SHB Da Nang to win on a football betting site. Knowing this, Ky Anh also participated, with the total betting amount of the group being more than 65 million VND.
As a result, SHB Da Nang Club won 3-1 over Ba Ria - Vung Tau Club. After the match, Hai received 8 million VND in winnings; Gia Huy and Quang Huy each received 13 million VND; Ky Anh received 4.6 million VND. As for Phong, because he failed to deposit money successfully, he gave his account to Hai to do it.
In addition, before the match between Dong Nai Club and Ba Ria - Vung Tau Club at the National Cup on November 24, 2023, 5 players including Gia Huy, Son Hai, Quang Huy, Phong and Duy continued to discuss and agree to arrange the score to earn money.
Gia Huy then contacted someone to arrange the deal and was introduced to a person named Quan (unknown background). In Dong Nai, the group met Quan and agreed that each person would receive 25-30 million VND if they followed the signal from Quan sitting in the stands.
The match ended with Ba Ria - Vung Tau Club losing 0-2 to Dong Nai Club. After the match, each player received 24 million VND.
