The second Quang Ninh Province Grandmaster and International Master Chess Tournament 2025 opened on the afternoon of June 6. This year's tournament brings together 90 players from 9 countries, including Vietnam, Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand... Among the Vietnamese players, there are more than 30 players from Hanoi .

The tournament is organized by the Vietnam Chess Federation in coordination with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Ninh province, with the professional support of the Future Grandmasters Club, to create conditions for domestic and international players to achieve the titles of Grandmaster (GM), International Master (IM), FIDE Master (FM). At the same time, it helps Vietnamese referees accumulate International Arbitration (IA, FA) standards and experience in organizing tournaments according to international standards.

The tournament is divided into three main groups. The GM group competes in a 9-round round robin, with the participation of Grandmasters such as: Bui Vinh, Nguyen Anh Dung, Tran Tuan Minh (Vietnam), Quizon Daniel, Gomez John Paul (Philippines), Priasmoro Novendra (Indonesia).

The players will compete in standard chess (90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move) and blitz chess (3 minutes plus 2 seconds per move). The tournament’s chief referee is Mr. Maung Maung Lwin – Vice President of the Southeast Asian Chess Federation, President of the Myanmar Chess Federation, and International Arbitrator (IA).

Mr. Maung Maung Lwin said: “Organizing practical tournaments like this should be done more often, so that athletes in Southeast Asia as well as in Vietnam have more opportunities to compete, accumulate points to improve their level. In particular, Quang Ninh has organized this tournament before, has a lot of experience and good infrastructure to serve international chess tournaments.”

According to the Vietnam Chess Federation, normally, international standard tournaments like this have to be played abroad, which is very expensive. Organizing tournaments well in Quang Ninh helps domestic athletes not have to travel far, save costs but still have the opportunity to participate in quality tournaments to practice, accumulate Elo points, aiming to reach the standards of International Master and Grandmaster. At the same time, the tournament also contributes to the development of tourism in Quang Ninh.
