According to the announcement from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the team that is classified as a "reserve" for Vietnam to participate in the continental arena in the 2023/24 season is HAGL Club. The mountain town team will have the right to participate in the AFC Cup 2023/24 in case Hai Phong Club passes the AFC Champions League play-off match.
On August 15, Hai Phong FC will play the Champions League qualifying round at Rangers FC, a team in Hong Kong (China). If they defeat this opponent, Coach Chu Dinh Nghiem and his team will continue to visit Korea to face Incheon United - Luong Xuan Truong's old team. Winning, Hai Phong FC will officially get a ticket to participate in the AFC Champions League 2023/24.
HAGL can participate in AFC Cup.
If Hai Phong FC fails, they will be relegated to the 2023/24 AFC Cup. In this case, HAGL FC will continue to hold the reserve spot, eligible to participate in the tournament if Hai Phong FC refuses to compete in the AFC Cup.
Last season, the mountain town team left a strong impression in the AFC Champions League when playing at home. They fell into Group H with the presence of Yokohama F. Marinos, Sydney FC and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. Coach Kiatisak Senamuang and his team defeated Sydney FC and had 2 more draws, earning 5 points. This is the highest score a Vietnamese team has ever achieved in the Asian Cup 1.
But this season, the situation has changed. HAGL said goodbye to a series of players such as Xuan Truong, Cong Phuong, Van Toan, Van Thanh, Hong Duy. The team did not play well and fell to Group B, meaning they had to fight for relegation. After that, HAGL continued to be eliminated from the National Cup after losing to First Division team PVF-CAND.
In fact, HAGL does not have much difficulty staying in the league. After the victory over Khanh Hoa Club in round 1, phase 2, HAGL has 17 points, 9 points more than the bottom team. If they have 1 more victory in round 2, HAGL will soon gain the right to stay in the league.
