Baidu, China's leading search engine provider, announced on June 27 that the latest version of Ernie 3.5, its artificial intelligence (AI) application, has surpassed ChatGPT from US company OpenAI in several key metrics, according to Reuters.
According to Baidu representatives, Ernie 3.5, the latest version of the Ernie AI model, has surpassed "ChatGPT in overall competency scores" and outperformed the GPT-4 model in several capabilities, including Chinese.
China's Baidu is competing with the US's OpenAI in AI technology.
OpenAI has not responded to a request for comment regarding the information released by Baidu. Baidu's announcement underscores the intense competition in the AI field between American and Chinese tech giants.
Baidu is the first major Chinese tech company to launch an AI product to compete with ChatGPT after announcing its Ernie Bot AI language in March. Ernie Bot, built on Baidu's older Ernie 3.0 AI model, has been tested for the past three months.
Tech mogul Elon Musk fears AI and calls for legislation to control it.
Baidu says its new model comes with more effective AI training. According to CNBC, Baidu also stated that the new development will support "plugins." Plugins are additional applications that allow Baidu's AI to function in more specific situations, such as summarizing long texts and generating more accurate responses. Previously, ChatGPT rolled out plugin support in March.
