AI in schools: A rival or a friend to students?

TPO - Students believe that AI is like a teacher who is always there to support them, but this dependence will make them lazy thinkers, and even reliant on it.

In the talk show "AI in Reading Culture: Rival or Friend?" held at Nguyen Sieu Secondary and High School on April 26th, Kenny Nguyen, Technical Director of Coc Coc Technology Company, argued that in the digital age, there has been a shift in information consumption. With limited time, readers are increasingly choosing concise and easy-to-understand content.

Readers use AI to summarize the content of books, helping them quickly grasp the main message instead of reading the entire book. However, this raises a serious question: does this technology aid reading or diminish the role of humans in exploration and discovery ?

Students enthusiastically shared their thoughts on using AI in learning, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the technology.

Students shared their experiences and asked questions to the guest speaker about effectively using AI in their studies and reading.

Many students believe that the emergence of AI has greatly assisted them in their studies, acting as a second teacher.

For example, when reading a good book, students can ask questions about difficult parts to allow the AI to analyze them in more depth, helping them understand the content better. Similarly, for complex vocabulary, students can seek information about the author or the context in which the work was created, using AI for further research.

However, some students also admitted to abusing technology to help them with assignments that they should have done themselves.

On the downside of AI, students also recognize that over-reliance on it can hinder critical thinking, making young people lazy because everything seems to have a solution. Some even warned that AI has sometimes provided inaccurate information.

In particular, regarding reading, a female student from Nguyen Sieu Secondary and High School shared that she often likes to explore and discover books that suit her learning and entertainment needs.

AI omits interesting details, and the reader is no longer able to relax.

She also used AI to summarize books, but it only provided basic bullet points, omitting important details. "While learners find the information quite basic, they become lazy about reading and memorizing, which is a fatal blow in a context where not many young people are interested in reading books these days," the female student said.

Kenny Nguyen believes that AI has outstanding features such as the ability to summarize content, saving readers time, or to convert text into speech, allowing us to listen instead of read. AI also provides knowledge and explains difficult concepts quickly.

But he also advised students to use AI in their studies ethically, because if they are not proactive and instead rely entirely on it, it will reduce their critical thinking and create a habit of lazy thinking.

Furthermore, readers may feel pressured by the use of technology, diminishing the relaxing and comfortable experience of traditional reading. This is also a limitation, a downside of AI.

According to Kenny Nguyen, the company uses tests to select students during the recruitment process. In the last two years, they have discovered that candidates used technology to solve the tests, so they lacked information during the interview. This is very worrying. Students, as the future leaders of the country, should understand the benefits and drawbacks of AI in order to use it most effectively.

In particular, in the context of learning, when students receive information from AI, they may not be able to determine its accuracy completely on their own and need to discuss it with their teachers or parents.

The expert also guided students on how to ask questions, provide context, and offer clear suggestions so that the AI's answers would be more specific and easier to understand.

On April 26th, Nguyen Sieu Secondary and High School organized the "Book and Reading Culture Festival" to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Southern Vietnam and the reunification of the country. The reading festival aims to help students understand the value of books and cultivate a passion for reading.

Students participate in the "Book and Reading Culture Festival".

At the event, the organizers awarded prizes to students who transformed themselves into literary and historical characters in the "Characters from Books Come to Life" competition.

Creative spaces attract hundreds of students, including book exhibitions, quizzes, storytelling through pictures, and book cover design.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Thuy, the school principal, believes that reading culture in the "flat world " is greatly supported by technology and AI, so we must not only cultivate a passion for reading but also become intelligent readers.

Today's generation of students is the successor generation to their ancestors in history, the "golden generation" building the future with the light of knowledge, faith, and national pride.

"Books will be a treasure trove to help you nurture the present and build the future, so I hope each student will be an ambassador of reading culture, inspiring their friends, parents, and relatives. After today's book festival, you will continue with a series of reading culture activities for a rewarding summer," she said.
