After four years of allowing employees to work from home, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has announced that the company will revert to its pre-Covid-19 work policy, requiring employees to be present at the office five days a week, starting next year.
In a message to employees on September 16th, CEO Jassy stated that in recent months, the company's leadership has been considering ways to improve collaboration and strengthen internal connections to deliver the best results for both customers and the business. To address this, the company has decided to bring employees back to the office five days a week, instead of the current three. This policy is expected to take effect on January 2nd, 2025.
Like many other businesses, Amazon employees worked remotely during the Covid-19 pandemic, as the company saw a surge in revenue from the boom in online shopping. In 2021, the company implemented a policy allowing leaders to decide how their teams would work.
In February 2023, Amazon required all employees to work in the office three days a week, leading to some protests from workers. However, CEO Jassy argued that employees unhappy with the change should learn to adapt.
According to Jassy, the company has found it easier for employees to learn, emulate, practice, and strengthen Amazon's culture and ideation skills when they work together in person. The decision to work in the office for the past 15 months has reinforced leadership's belief in the benefits. Jassy also said Amazon will increase the percentage of individual contributors by the end of Q1 2025. Employees with approved exceptions will be able to work remotely.
Meanwhile, economic historian Dror Poleg speculates that Amazon's new policy is designed to encourage some employees to leave the company. According to the New York Times, some Amazon employees appeared disappointed by the summons to return to the office, expressing their unhappiness and frustration in internal messaging channels.
