Amazon uses AI to optimize delivery and warehouse efficiency

Amazon will develop intelligent warehouse robots capable of performing multiple tasks at once to optimize logistics, deliver faster and reduce waste, driving a global logistics revolution.

American multinational technology company Amazon recently announced a series of initiatives to apply artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the efficiency of supply chain operations and delivery, showing the great potential of AI in contributing to revolutionizing the logistics sector.

At an event held on June 4 at Lab126 in Silicon Valley, Amazon said it would establish a team to develop intelligent warehouse robots capable of performing multiple tasks at once - instead of just doing one thing as it does now.

Using “agent AI” technology, these new-generation robots can automatically unload trucks, then retrieve parts to repair equipment.

Lab126 team leader and roboticist Yesh Dattatreya said that thanks to the new app, customers can receive their goods sooner. He stressed that the robot will be especially useful during peak seasons such as the holidays, thanks to its ability to lift heavy objects in tight spaces.

Amazon hopes that applying AI will not only help shorten delivery times but also reduce waste and carbon emissions.

Amazon said it is pushing to develop a system that can listen, understand and execute commands in natural language for robots, turning these "machines" into flexible and versatile assistants.

Currently, Amazon has not announced the number of robots to be deployed or the specific time, because the design and scale are still under research.

In terms of delivery, Amazon is also using generative AI to build more detailed digital maps, helping drivers accurately locate delivery locations, especially in hard-to-find areas such as office complexes or apartments.

Amazon added that the technology is also the basis for its project to develop navigation glasses for drivers. These smart glasses will replace handheld GPS devices, displaying directions right on the screen attached to the glasses while the driver is driving or carrying goods.

Amazon's Geospatial Technology Vice President Viraj Chatterjee said AI maps are being tested daily in the US, bringing significant efficiency in densely populated areas.

While the technology has the potential to be incorporated into navigation glasses, the hardware for the glasses is currently in its early stages of development.

Besides logistics, Amazon said AI can help forecast customer demand in each area, thereby optimizing same-day delivery services by analyzing factors such as price, weather, and shopping events (such as Prime Day - Amazon's biggest online shopping event of the year)./.
