The Times reports that Benfica see Amorim as an interesting option for the coaching job. Joao Noronha Lopes, one of five candidates running for the Benfica presidency, is said to be keen on bringing Amorim to the Estadio de Luz.
"He is an excellent coach and is currently under contract with MU. I will not say anything that will affect Benfica, because they have a very important match coming up," Mr. Lopes hinted.
Multiple sources in Portugal say that if he wins the presidential election in October, Lopes will appoint Amorim. Benfica are currently led by Bruno Lage, the former Wolves coach, and have won two of their opening two games of the season.
Amorim made his name as a manager of Sporting CP, helping the club win two domestic titles in four years. As a player, Amorim played over 150 games and won three league titles in nine years at Benfica, and was a firm favourite with the club's fans.
Amorim's future at Old Trafford is in doubt after the team was knocked out of the League Cup by Grimsby. According to the Times , Amorim still receives support from the MU board and will continue to lead the team against Burnley on the night of August 30.
The source also confirmed that if MU continues to fail to achieve positive results against Burnley, Amorim is at risk of being fired.
