On May 14, Dr. Huynh Nguyen Duy Liem, head of the pediatrics department at Bac Lieu General Hospital, said that four cases of children poisoned by accidentally eating rat poison were brought to the hospital for emergency treatment and are now stable, and doctors are continuing to monitor and actively treat them.
Previously, the hospital received four children aged 5-9 from Vinh Trach Dong commune, Bac Lieu city, in a state of nausea and dizziness. Immediately, doctors examined, diagnosed and cleaned the stomach.
According to the children’s families, their parents both work far away and left them with their grandmother. After school, the children often went to the fishmonger’s place in the market to play. At that time, the children ate instant noodles mixed with rat poison used by a nearby vendor to trap rats.
Upon discovering the incident, the children were given first aid and immediately taken to the commune health center, then transferred to Bac Lieu Provincial General Hospital for treatment.
Dr. Liem recommends that families be especially careful in storing and using toxic drugs at home or in the business to avoid unfortunate incidents like the one mentioned above.
According to Mr. Liem, after only a few hours of exposure, the toxins in rat poison can penetrate the intestines into the body, causing life-threatening consequences. Therefore, when discovering that rat poison has been accidentally ingested, first aid must be given immediately and the patient must be taken to the nearest medical facility.
