Safety and peace of mind for elite athletes.

Earlier this week, the Director of the Vietnam Sports Department, Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet, chaired a meeting with representatives of the sports teams currently training in Hanoi in preparation for the 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games).

With just over two months remaining until the opening of the regional sports games , the Vietnamese Sports Delegation has formed 95% of its team and is in the final stages of training.

However, according to Mr. Nguyen Anh Minh, Deputy Director in charge of the National High-Level Athlete Training Center, the national teams are currently following the plan, ensuring adequate nutrition and supplementary functional foods, but there is an urgent need to supplement the team of doctors for athlete rehabilitation.

Leaders in the sports sector, coaches of the athletics, karate, wushu, sepak takraw, and taekwondo teams, all stated that athletes are currently training intensely to reach their peak performance at the 33rd SEA Games, but there is a shortage of doctors and specialists to provide healthcare and massage to minimize injuries. Facing the general difficulty of a lack of medical staff at the Center, some teams have even proposed to the leaders of the Vietnam Sports Department that they be provided with additional equipment such as massage machines and ice makers for athletes to use after each training session. They also hope for training courses to disseminate skills in physiotherapy and rehabilitation to coaches and athletes.

In fact, sports medicine has long been a weakness of Vietnamese sports. Currently, the entire sector has only one mainstay, the Vietnam Sports Hospital, which focuses primarily on treating injuries, while the areas of care, rehabilitation, and direct involvement in training are almost completely lacking in personnel and facilities.

Furthermore, the current number of specialized sports doctors in Vietnam has not kept pace with demand, resulting in a near-complete lack of experts and specialists in specialized areas such as rehabilitation therapy or, at a higher level, psychology and nutrition.

The lack of specialized sports medical staff is also one of the reasons why Vietnamese sports always face concerns about doping and serious injuries. Without dedicated personnel, coaches and athletes cannot control the use of functional products to aid recovery due to a lack of knowledge or failure to keep up with medical regulations, easily leading to misuse or excessive use of banned substances.

Furthermore, issues related to the athlete's gender also require consultation or supervision from a team of health experts, as many factors are beyond the assessment capacity and authority of the coach or sport manager.

The Director of the Vietnam Sports Department, Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet, emphasized that the concerns and suggestions from coaches and athletes are not only immediate needs but also legitimate demands for the sustainable development of Vietnamese sports. However, at present, the sports sector is only addressing immediate issues, providing equipment such as ice machines to aid recovery, agreeing to proposals for training at centers with adequate facilities in terms of health, working with the Vietnam Sports Hospital for support during this period, and advising national teams to be serious about using nutritional supplements...

It is clear that the difficulties in the healthcare sector that Vietnamese sports are facing are not easy to solve overnight. Even in daily life, there is a shortage of doctors and specialized medical facilities for treating injuries from sports training due to the rapid development of sports movements in urban areas.

However, given the urgent demands from top-level sports teams, which have the potential to significantly impact international competition, the sports sector may need to flexibly choose outsourcing solutions, including hiring foreign experts, providing training for local staff, and equipping them with advanced health monitoring applications… while awaiting the development of a sports medical team. In other words, ensuring the safety of athletes is crucial so they can confidently dedicate themselves and compete to the best of their abilities for national sports.
