Does eating mangoes cause internal heat?

In summer, many people enjoy ripe mangoes because of their sweet, fragrant, and juicy taste. However, besides its appealing flavor, this fruit is often associated with the belief that "eating mangoes causes internal heat," which makes many people hesitant to eat too many.

  • Nutritionists assert that there is no scientific evidence to suggest that eating mangoes increases body temperature.
  • The feeling of "heartburn" after eating mangoes is actually often related to overeating, dehydration, or a sensitive stomach.
  • Eating mangoes in moderation is still beneficial in the summer thanks to their high fiber and vitamin C content, and their ability to aid digestion.

Nutritionist Chitra BK, Head of Nutrition at KIMS Hospital in Bengaluru (India), deciphers the truth about whether eating mangoes causes 'internal heat' in the body.

The expert explained: From a medical standpoint, no scientific studies have been conducted on the correlation between eating mangoes and an increase in body temperature. Symptoms referred to as "feeling hot" are often confused with eating mangoes. From a medical perspective, the phrase "feeling hot" commonly used in everyday language does not refer to a real increase in core body temperature, according to the Hindustan Times.

However, the belief that eating mangoes causes "internal heat" is not entirely unfounded. According to nutritionist Chitra BK, after eating mangoes, some people may experience symptoms such as mouth ulcers, heartburn, indigestion, excessive sweating, skin irritation, or a feeling of heat in the body. Therefore, they often assume that mangoes increase body "heat."

In reality, these symptoms are real but are mainly related to overall diet or insufficient water intake, and not because mangoes directly cause the body to "heat up".

Ms. Chitra also confirmed that there is no link between mangoes and acne, although eating too many can lead to increased blood sugar levels, which may cause breakouts in acne-prone individuals.

So what's the problem?

According to expert Chitra, the cause stems from overeating. Therefore, moderation is essential. People who are prone to acid reflux, have sensitive stomachs, mouth ulcers, or blood sugar problems should be more cautious when eating mangoes.

However, mangoes have a natural soothing effect, helping the body adapt better to hot weather. Thanks to their high fiber and vitamin C content, these fruits aid digestion and improve gut function. Eating mangoes in moderation can also contribute to improved digestive health during the summer, according to the Hindustan Times .

How many mangoes are enough to eat?

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), a reasonable serving of mango is equivalent to about 1 cup of chopped mango (approximately 165 grams), or about half a medium-sized mango. This amount provides plenty of vitamin C, vitamin A, and fiber but only about 100 calories. Adults can generally eat 1-2 servings of fruit per day, with mangoes consumed in moderation due to their relatively high natural sugar content.

Experts also note that people with diabetes or those needing to control their weight should not eat too many mangoes at once, and should combine them with meals or foods rich in protein and fiber to limit rapid spikes in blood sugar.
